More info Diplomats in Brussels have spent the past two weeks trying to get support from all members of the European Union (EU) to cease Russian oil imports by the end of 2022. The measure is part of a sixth raft of sanctions the bloc wishes to get signed off against Moscow. Doing so would help to cut funding for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. But the proposals have yet to win over Hungary and its Prime Minister Viktor Orban . Qatar, key US ally, faces new accusations of terror funding
Qatar , a key U.S. ally in the Persian Gulf, is facing increased scrutiny over its alleged financial ties to terrorism in a lawsuit from relatives of a slain American journalist and a separate federal investigation into a member of the country’s royal family. The family of Steven Sotloff alleged in a federal lawsuit Friday that prominent Qatari institutions wired $800,000 to an Islamic State “judge” who ordered the murder of Sotloff and another American journalist, James Foley . The two were beheaded in Syria in 2014, their killings filmed and published in grisly propaganda videos. “We want to do everything we can to make sure no other family has to suffer what we have suffered,” the Sotloff family said in a statement explaining their lawsuit. Separately, federal prosecutors have been investigating potential ties between terror groups and Khalid bin Hamad Al-Thani, the half-brother of Qatar’s ruling emir, according to documents reviewed by The Associated Press … [Read more...] about Qatar, key US ally, faces new accusations of terror funding
Why the West Needs to End the War in Ukraine Soon
The war in Ukraine is entering a more dangerous phase. Even though Russia appears to have downsized its goals after Kyiv blunted Moscow’s initial invasion, the Kremlin is now determined to enlarge the chunk of eastern and southern Ukraine that it grabbed in 2014. Meanwhile, NATO allies are pouring in arms, providing intelligence, and savoring the prospect of a “victory” that entails expelling Russia from Ukraine. With both sides doubling down, NATO must engage in a forthright dialogue with the Ukrainian government about its goals and how best to bring the bloodshed to a close sooner rather than later. Russia has already been dealt a decisive strategic defeat. Ukrainian forces have rebuffed the advance on Kyiv and retain control of most of the country; the West has hit Russia with severe economic sanctions; and NATO has reinforced its eastern flank, while Finland and Sweden now seek to join the alliance. For NATO and Ukraine alike, strategic prudence argues in favor of pocketing these … [Read more...] about Why the West Needs to End the War in Ukraine Soon
Is India’s auto industry ready to go electric?
India's manufacturing of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) has kicked off with several automakers rolling out electric cars at a rapid pace. India is among a handful of countries that aim for electric vehicles (EVs) to account for at least 30% of all new automotive sales by 2030. In March, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who has been championing alternative fuel, drove to Parliament in his hydrogen-powered Toyota car to make a statement that he would use it himself as a pilot project. "I have favored a green transition in fuel, and rapid strides in green fuel technology will reduce the cost of electric vehicles, bringing them on a par with petrol-run vehicles in a short time," Gadkari said. According to NITI Aayog, an Indian public policy think tank, by 2030, 80% of two- and three-wheelers, 40% of buses and 30%-70% of cars in India will be EVs. Can India achieve its green ambitions? At the COP26 summit, India pledged to achieve net-zero emissions status by 2070 and … [Read more...] about Is India’s auto industry ready to go electric?
WWE Raw results, grades: Asuka beats Becky Lynch after Green Mist following backstage chaos after Sasha Banks and Naomi walk out
Despite behind the scenes chaos, WWE Raw delivered a stunning last minute main event between Asuka and Becky Lynch. At the start of the show, the company initially advertised a Six Pack Challenge to determine Bianca Belair’s opponent for her Raw Women’s Title defence at Hell In A Cell , which would have seen Women’s Tag Team Champions Sasha Banks and Naomi facing off in a bout featuring Doudrop, Nikki A.S.H., Lynch and Asuka. It’s said Banks and Naomi walked out of the show , with WWE issuing a statement saying the pair left their titles on the desk of John Laurinaitis before leaving the venue with their suitcases in hand. The company chose to reference the situation on-air as they were forced to pivot on the fly, scrapping the planned main event – which had already been announced to fans – and opting for a one-on-one match. Despite Lynch and Asuka getting very little time to prepare for their bout, the chemistry between the two stars was on display here as … [Read more...] about WWE Raw results, grades: Asuka beats Becky Lynch after Green Mist following backstage chaos after Sasha Banks and Naomi walk out
Hydrogen-powered trains could be carrying UK passengers by 2023
New hydrogen-powered trains are being trialled on British rail lines for the first time, and the Government has said they could be carrying passengers by 2023. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps was aboard a low-carbon HydroFLEX train for its inaugural journey on Tuesday, along lines between Long Marston, in Warwickshire and Evesham. It is hoped the new technology will allow ministers to start retrofitting old diesel trains from 2023 to make them more eco-friendly and decarbonise non-electrified lines. Alongside the new train trials, the Government also unveiled a host of other hydrogen projects, including funding for 19 hydrogen-powered refuse trucks in Glasgow as well as for research into cleaner mass hydrogen production. In an exclusive oped for the Telegraph , Mr Shapps said Britain’s role in developing clean hydrogen technologies could help put it at the forefront of new industrial ‘green revolution’. He said: “While Britain’s pioneering role in the industrial … [Read more...] about Hydrogen-powered trains could be carrying UK passengers by 2023

Here are five new high speed rail technologies that make Britain’s HS2 seem outdated already
Boris Johnson has given the green light for a high speed rail project connecting London to northern England, saying he would take a firmer grip on a project that is behind schedule and running billions of pounds over budget. HS2, the high speed line will slash journey times and add capacity to Britain's crowded network, allowing the UK to catch up with countries like France and Spain which have extensive high-speed rail. But out of date and spiraling over budget, the HS2 project (High Speed 2) has been slammed in an unpublished Government report that warns costs could continue to rise another 20pc. While the first phase of construction has only just begun, the project is already far above its original budget of £34bn. With the line not expected to begin operations until at least 2028, there are fears the new service will be out of date by the time it is ultimately deployed. There are already new technologies being developed that could supplant parts of HS2 or provide … [Read more...] about Here are five new high speed rail technologies that make Britain’s HS2 seem outdated already
Hydrogen plans for Southland will push up household power bills – Simon Upton
RICKY WILSON/STUFF How green hydrogen is made commercially at BOC's facility in Glenbrook south of Auckland. A large green hydrogen factory could create more problems – and emissions – than it solves, warned Parliamentary Commission for the Environment Simon Upton. If made from renewable electricity, hydrogen is a low-carbon source of energy and may one day be used for metal-making, shipping and aviation. But it relies on an inefficient process: up to 30 per cent of energy is lost in the manufacture of green hydrogen. Therefore, renewable electricity might be more effectively used to electrify vehicles and boilers in the next decade, Upton wrote in a letter to ministers. READ MORE: How 'green' hydrogen gas can help us protect the climate Contact and Meridian seek partners to investigate world's largest green hydrogen plant NZ to collaborate with Singapore on hydrogen export potential The Government has already asked the public for ideas for … [Read more...] about Hydrogen plans for Southland will push up household power bills – Simon Upton
