Boris Johnson ‘setting up a charity’ to fund lavish refurb of his Downing Street flat

Boris Johnson is trying to set up a charity to help fund a luxurious revamp of his grace-and-favour flat, it was claimed today. The Prime Minister faces questions over works overseen by his fiancee Carrie Symonds in the plush, four-bed living space above No11. The 32-year-old has removed Theresa May ’s “John Lewis furniture nightmare” and paintings by British artist John Nash hang alongside works by the PM himself, according to an article in Tatler. The Cabinet Office will be forced to publish any taxpayer spending on the project in its annual accounts this summer. But today No10 refused to deny reports that the Prime Minister, 56, wants to fund the some of refurb through donations - after being told he could only claim around £30,000 from the state. EU, US impose sanctions on Russia over Alexei Navalny poisoning

The US on Tuesday slapped sanctions on Russian individuals and entities over the near-fatal poisoning of prominent opposition figure Alexei Navalny with a nerve agent, Biden administration officials said. Speaking to reporters on a conference call, the senior White House officials said the sanctions were being imposed in coordination with the European Union, and urged the release of Navalny from prison. Chancellor promises to use ‘fiscal firepower’ in budget to protect jobs and livelihoods

The chancellor will promise to utilise his "fiscal firepower" to protect the jobs and livelihoods of Britons when he delivers his budget on Wednesday. Rishi Sunak will tell the Commons that he will do "whatever it takes" to help business and people through the "moment of crisis" caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a lunchtime statement to MPs, the chancellor is expected to lay out a three-point economic plan focused on helping people through the pandemic, fixing the public finances and building the future economy. US and EU hit Russia with co-ordinated sanctions over attempted murder and jailing of Alexei Navalny

The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions targeting a number of senior Russian officials and businesses over the attempted murder and jailing of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The 27-nation bloc imposed bans on travel and froze the assets in Europe of four members of Vladimir Putin 's inner circle. They are: • Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation An EU statement said the four were listed "over their roles in the arbitrary arrest, prosecution and sentencing of Mr Navalny , as well as the repression of peaceful protests in connection with his unlawful treatment". Meanwhile, the US announced sanctions of its own against Russian officials and businesses.
