WHEN news of the latest lockdown broke, parents all over the nation were horrified at the thought of having to homeschool their kids again. The internet erupted with mums venting their fury as they geared up to juggle work with becoming a substitute teacher . Women’s Bundesliga roundup: Bayer Leverkusen on the march
Bayer Leverkusen finally on the right path The women's Bundesliga table isn't always the most surprising; most of the time, it's the same teams in the title race. But this week, it's a little different, with Bayer Leverkusen sitting fourth with 23 points after 14 games. This weekend, the team secured a dominant and impressive 4-2 victory over Turbine Potsdam, thanks in part to a hat trick from top scorer Milena Nikolic, who now has 10 goals in 13 games. Bayer Leverkusen may be a big name in men's football, but the women's team has often failed to unleash its full potential in the past. Introduced back in 2008 after taking over nearby sports club TuS Köln, Leverkusen's women have only been established in the Bundesliga since 2018, albeit usually in a relegation battle rather than challenging at the top. But they are aiming higher now, with coach Achim Feifel stating recently that their goal is sixth place. So, what's changed? First, most of their key players have remained at … [Read more...] about Women’s Bundesliga roundup: Bayer Leverkusen on the march
Asia’s ‘Milk Tea’ activists cross borders for democratic change
Solidarity between pro-democracy advocates has been gaining momentum across Asia in the last couple of months, both in cyberspace and in the streets. The informal Milk Tea Alliance unites like-minded political activists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Myanmar. Although their agendas at home vary, protesters clashing with riot police in Myanmar can relate to Thais demanding reform of the monarchy. Hong Kongers contesting Beijing’s National Security Law , meanwhile, can resonate with Taiwanese resisting Chinese mainland encroachment. Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a professor of political science at Thailand's Chulalongkorn University, told DW that the growing transnational movement "has aligned the aspirations of young demographics across Asia, favoring democratic norms and values against authoritarianism in their countries and beyond." How did the Milk Tea Alliance come about? In recent months, young pro-democracy activists in Asia have shown how online activism can morph into … [Read more...] about Asia’s ‘Milk Tea’ activists cross borders for democratic change

Love Island’s Yewande takes another swipe at rival Lucie and says mis-pronouncing her name ‘is racist and malicious’
LOVE Island's Yewande Biala has today taken another swipe at rival Lucie Donlan, saying that mis-pronouncing her name is "racist and malicious". It all started earlier this week when the Irish scientist-and-reality star, 25 , said she had to “correct” Lucie on how she said her name “multiple times”. Now, Yewande has spoken again about the issue in a column for The Independent . She wrote: "There is a longstanding history of forced assimilation as a way to maintain the power structure. "Dominant groups dismissing certain names as “too hard” is tied to racism and other forms of oppression. She also said: "When someone doesn't take the time to learn the proper way to pronounce another person's name, or worse – intentionally mocks it for being “too difficult” to pronounce, or tries to ascribe another name to make themselves feel comfortable – it can come across as malicious." It all started when Yewande shared a lengthy tweet where she described her experience of … [Read more...] about Love Island’s Yewande takes another swipe at rival Lucie and says mis-pronouncing her name ‘is racist and malicious’
