Harry and Meghan will help save the planet by having only two children, for which the globe and taxpayer are duly grateful. Jeremy Corbyn promises to go further, with a ban on fracking for gas if Labour wins power. Otherwise “we’re doomed!” he warns, in a fairly convincing take-off of Private Frazer. There are votes here, but it’s a short-sighted, blinkered policy that would make the UK dependent on insecure imports from Africa or Russia. Or fracked, from the USA. By Jezza’s tree-hugging logic, Cornish tin, mined since Roman times, would have stayed in the ground. Along with the iron ore, limestone and coal that powered the Industrial Revolution. Not much new here. Scotland produced oil from shale in 1860, and the industry lasted a century, pioneering extraction technology and employing 12,000 men. Today, Europe’s biggest on-shore oil well is at Wytch Farm, Dorset, and its Kimmeridge “nodding donkey” – like something out of … [Read more...] about Paul Routledge: ‘Turn off the hot air and go frack for gas, Jeremy’

Ahmad Cheers remembers the day a few years back when he knew his neighborhood was in the throes of change. He noticed a group of bikers, mostly white, riding though the northern tip of Pittsburgh, Atlanta, well after dark. In some other parts of the city that may not have been remarkable, but here it took him aback. “It just really surprised me,” said Cheers, 28. “When I came to Atlanta in 2008, to be honest you couldn’t really pay white people to come over here.” Named for its resemblance to the steel-milling, hardscrabble Pennsylvania city in the north, Pittsburgh has long been a predominantly black (upwards of 95%, according to the 2010 census) and working-class section of southern in-city Atlanta. Today the neighborhood, which was ravaged by the 2008 mortgage crisis, when it saw vacancy rates of up to 50%, is in the midst of an economic turnaround. Bright-yellow advertisements announcing “We buy houses” hang on nearly every utility pole and … [Read more...] about Nowhere for people to go: who will survive the gentrification of Atlanta?

Amid the panic caused by the Cyprus bailout plan, Cypriots employed in the island's oil and gas industry may be approaching their work with renewed vigour this week. Some experts believe Cyprus could be sitting on natural gas reserves worth up to €300bn (£257bn), a bonanza for a country with an estimated GDP of €15bn. These gas fields have come under the spotlight after Cyprus's president, Nicolas Anastasiades, promised that people who kept deposits in domestic banks for the next two years would be given bonds linked to revenues from natural gas. Traders said they were not aware of any such bond but could see how it would work as a sweetener for customers. In the same way, investors in Greek bonds were offered a so-called GDP warrant for taking part in a debt swap last year, which will pay out if and when Greece's economic fortunes improve. But the Cypriot gas reserves have not been proved. Back in 2011 the US energy company Noble announced a successful well off … [Read more...] about Doubts over Cyprus gas bonanza
