More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers vote for strike action in row over pay
More than 115,000 Royal Mail staff have voted in favour of a national strike in what could be the first in a wave of public sector walk outs in the coming months as essential workers continue to struggle with the cost of living crisis. In a ballot announced today, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) – which represents Royal Mail Group workers – voted by 97.6%, on a 77% turnout, to take industrial action. The union is demanding that Royal Mail group enters into negotiations to secure 'a straight, no-strings pay increase for workers.' The Royal Mail said it was 'disappointed' by the strike announcement after offering workers a 5.5% salary boost. It comes as the Government geared up for a hot summer and autumn fight with trade unions today as it offered two million public sector workers including doctors and nurses below-inflation pay rises. More than a million NHS staff including nurses, midwives and paramedics have been offered increased that will see the worst-paid … [Read more...] about More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers vote for strike action in row over pay
Royal Mail workers to stage strikes over four days in call for ‘dignified, proper pay rise’
Royal Mail workers are set to stage four days of strikes in the coming weeks in a dispute over pay. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said over 115,000 staff will form the biggest strike of the summer so far to demand a "dignified, proper pay rise". Walkouts will take place on Friday 26 and Wednesday 31 August and Thursday 8 and Friday 9 September. It follows a recent ballot for strike action which saw members vote by 97.6% on a 77% turnout to take action . The union said management responded by imposing a 2% pay rise, which it believed would lead to a "dramatic reduction" in workers' living standards because of soaring inflation. Horrifying pictures show why filthy Chinese restaurant was forced to close again
A Chinese takeaway has been accused of ‘putting the grim in Grimsby’ after being shut down for the second time in four years. Revolting pictures show the Lincolnshire takeaway covered in rat droppings, with pools of urine on the floor, while meat was left to defrost in a sink and dumped in dirty washing up bowls. Council officials branded China House an ‘imminent risk’ to public health and shut it down in November. Images from the venue also revealed mouldy food left in containers and boxes of sauces and spices with what appears to be bite marks from rats on them There were also dirty cooking utensils, stained tea towels and kitchen surfaces thick with grime, mould and food. A chopping board was also being used to prepare both raw and ready to eat food, while cold food items were left out of the fridges because they were over-filled. Grimsby Magistrate Court was told that owner Wen Yi Cao ‘failed at all stages of production, processing and distribution to protect … [Read more...] about Horrifying pictures show why filthy Chinese restaurant was forced to close again

British defence experts expressed alarm yesterday after Donald Trump suggested he might undo a multi-billion dollar stealth fighter project that is to form a core part of the United Kingdom's defensive capabilities. The president-elect took a casual shot at the F-35 programme for the world's most advanced fighter jet tweeting on Monday that the cost was "out of control". "Billions of dollars can and will be saved on military (and other) purchases after January 20th," he wrote, indicating a change in strategy after his inauguration. Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 6, 2016 But defence experts told this newspaper there would be disastrous consequences for Britain if Mr Trump were to put the plan on the scrap heap at this late stage.
