Military commanders and other US officials say the HIMARS and artillery systems have been crucial in Ukraine’s ongoing fight to try to prevent Russia from taking more ground. I’ll Shift for Myself
by KEN PURDY THE reactionary is not a happy man. His face rigidly set against Progress, he is hustled along, a mere bean on a cannery belt conveyer, the green fields and rich sunsets of Better Times forever behind him. All reactionaries must by definition be miserable, but the saddest of the lot, it seems to me, is the Automobile Reactionary, f am one such, and I should know. The Art Reactionary may deplore Picasso, but he cannot be compelled against, his will to look at anything but the Dutch masters, if that be his pleasure. The Literary Reactionary may retch at the mere murmured mention of Truman Capote, but no one later than Dickens need weight his shelves. The Political Reactionary, sunk in a daylong agony of choler at That Man, can still work and scheme and burrow underground to unseat him in the end, fair or foul. But the Automobile Reactionary cannot escape. One cannot, in this country, flee the automobile. One must be transported, willy-nilly. Even immured in some … [Read more...] about I’ll Shift for Myself

Most of it was earmarked for developing countries, including South Sudan. Citing skyrocketing global food costs, the World Food Program has said it's slashing the amount of aid it can provide to 1.7 million people in the impoverished African nation. The WFP's acting country director in South Sudan, Adeyinka Badejo-Sanogo, … [Read more...] about Ukrainian mayor says with Black Sea blockade, Putin seeks to “blackmail the whole world” by starving its neediest
Fighting famine in war-torn South Sudan
The following is a script from “Fighting Famine,” which aired on March 19, 2017. Scott Pelley reports. Nicole Young, producer. Katie Kerbstat, associate producer. A rare famine emergency has been declared in the youngest nation on Earth. South Sudan, in East Africa, was brought into the world, in 2011, with the help of the United States. But it’s one of the world’s least developed countries and civil war has left it destitute. Five million people don’t know where their next meal is coming from and of them, 100,000 are facing death. Holding off a catastrophe is the mission of the UN’s World Food Programme . The WFP was an American idea, created in 1961, and the U.S. is still the largest donor. Now WFP has launched one of its largest rescues ever but in South Sudan too many people are fighting for life. Josephine is seven and down to 24 pounds. Hunger left her at the mercy of disease. And now she’s being consumed by tuberculosis. This is why TB used to be called consumption. … [Read more...] about Fighting famine in war-torn South Sudan
