By Vanessa Clarke and Sanchia Berg Published 10 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Plans to let nurseries and childminders look after more two-year-olds in England are to be put to parents. In England, one adult can be in charge of four children, but the government says it wants to lower the cost for parents by following the Scottish model of one adult caring for five toddlers. Most nurseries say the systems cannot be compared and do not want the change. A mum who has spent more than £90,000 in nursery fees in seven years doubts a change would save parents much money. The consultation into the idea is expected to take eight weeks. Will Quince, the children and families minister, said it was about offering flexibility to early years settings and that he did not want to do anything that "compromises quality or safety". He told the BBC the Scottish … [Read more...] about Nurseries in England: Parents asked about proposed change to carer ratios

What we just heard about Trump, Pence and Giuliani on January 6th was beyond the worst-case scenario
They knew. They all knew. Today’s hearing focused on Donald Trump, John Eastman, and his allies’ effort to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the results of the 2020 election on January 6. According to testimony, key players in Trump’s inner circle — including Trump and Eastman themselves — knew that Pence overturning the election would be illegal, but pushed him to do it anyway. In other words, they knowingly launched an illegal attempted coup. The two in-person witnesses today were Pence’s former counsel Greg Jacob and retired federal judge Michael Luttig. Luttig is a well-respected conservative legal icon; so much so, he’s been considered for a Supreme Court nomination in the past. Ted Cruz and John Eastman were clerks for Luttig, and Pence reached out to Luttig ahead of January 6 for advice. Luttig advised that he did not have the authority to overturn the election. The hearing today went on to outline a damning timeline of events that would’ve read like a … [Read more...] about What we just heard about Trump, Pence and Giuliani on January 6th was beyond the worst-case scenario
Let us into 5G and we could pay millions for NZ cyber lab, says Huawei
China's Huawei says it could invest millions of dollars in a "cybersecurity evaluation centre" that would be under the control of the Government Communications Security Bureau. The lab could vet 5G and other equipment that Huawei and potentially other companies supplied to the country's telcos, Huawei NZ deputy managing director Andrew Bowater said. But GCSB director-general Andrew Hampton responded coolly, appearing to indicate the offer might not be enough to allay its concerns about Huawei's involvement in the industry. Huawei's proposal would mirror its arrangements in Britain under which Huawei pays "tens of millions" for a laboratory to check equipment it supplies both to the UK and to New Zealand. Next development in Huawei saga may not be about 5G
ANALYSIS It may take months or years before Kiwi telecommunications companies find out whether they will be able to buy 5G equipment from China's Huawei . But the next instalment in the Huawei saga could come sooner than that, with one of New Zealand's spy agencies revealing it is requiring telecommunications companies to submit plans on proposed network changes on average every few days. In December, the Government Communications Security Bureau blocked a proposal by Spark to use Huawei equipment to upgrade its mobile network to 5G, citing "significant network security risks". Spark now has the right to explain how it could "prevent or mitigate" the risks the GCSB has identified, after which the spy agency could refer the matter to the Minister responsible for GCSB, Andrew Little, for a final decision if it wasn't satisfied. The Republican Party has given up on governing
On Tuesday evening firebrand Representative Lauren Boebert unsurprisingly beat back her Republican primary challenger, state Senator Don Coram, in Colorado ’s 3rd district. Mr Coram had run on the fact that Ms Boebert, who has earned a reputation for inflammatory remarks, was ineffective. “I have been critical of the opponent’s record and I’d liken it to a new Denver football player, in that she throws a lot of passes but has zero completions”, he said in their debate last month, according to Colorado Newsline . “Who would be happy with that?” In response, Ms Boebert criticized his work with Democrats in Colorado’s state legislature and said he voted for a “Department of Illegal Immigration,” because he supported to create the Colorado Office of New Americans, which he defended by saying undocumented immigrants had a right to go to school and health care, which was met with boos. In the end, voters in the 3rd district won. But it’s further indication that in … [Read more...] about The Republican Party has given up on governing
