Europe accused of ‘double-standard’ on Ukrainian refugees
The quick acceptance of Ukrainians fleeing Russia's aggression puts a spotlight on Europe's “double standard” for migrants, standing against its non-welcome for people fleeing violence in Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere, the head of the world's largest humanitarian network said on Monday (NZT Tuesday). Francesco Rocca, president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said he doesn't think “there is any difference" between someone fleeing eastern Ukraine's Donbas region and someone escaping the Boko Haram extremist group in Nigeria . “Those who are fleeing violence, those who are seeking protection, should be treated equally,” said Rocca, whose organisation operates in more than 192 countries with almost 15 million volunteers. Speaking at a news conference, he said there is “a moral imperative” to help people escaping violence and upheavals, and “the political, public and humanitarian response to the Ukraine crisis has shown what is … [Read more...] about Europe accused of ‘double-standard’ on Ukrainian refugees

By James Waterhouse Published 23 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war At first, I couldn't see the damage to Ivan Simoroz's parents' home in the Ukrainian town of Borodyanka, near Kyiv. Then I realised that was because there was nothing left that resembled a home. "The ground was shaking, I started calling each of my relatives, my wife, brother, mother, father, grandma - they … [Read more...] about Ukraine: The police officer who lost his family in one Russian strike

Descent into hell: The fall of Mariupol
I t was never the most picturesque place – a grimy industrial port, dominated by a Soviet steelworks known as one of Europe’s worst pollution blackspots. But while the Ukrainian city of Mariupol was unlikely to grace a tourist brochure, no shortage of people proved willing to die for the right to call it their own. Today, the once-obscure port on the Azov Sea is destined for a place in history books, as the scene of some of the fiercest urban combat the 21st century has seen – and a reminder of the kind of warfare Europe hoped to have turned the page on. On Tuesday, following a siege lasting 82 days, Russia finally claimed the “surrender” of the city, after more than 200 Ukrainian fighters holed up in the city’s Azovstal steel plant handed themselves into Kremlin custody. The fighters, some badly wounded, did so as part of a deal between Moscow and Kyiv which will see them returned home in exchange for Russian PoWs. For the Kremlin, the end of Mariupol’s remaining pocket of … [Read more...] about Descent into hell: The fall of Mariupol

Two-Card Monte: Why Mastercard And Visa Rarely Shut Down Scammers Who Are Ripping Off Consumers
Paul Paolucci, the top cop for one of the world’s biggest credit card companies, sure had some interesting friends. One made a fortune fronting for pornography websites that needed access to Mastercard’s and Visa’s payment networks. Paolucci, who oversaw Mastercard’s merchant fraud control, was photographed cavorting around the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel with him and a group of women in white corset minidresses. A second was a Lamborghini-driving e-commerce mogul with whom Paolucci used to celebrate family holidays. The mogul ended up in prison for a financial crime he committed, in part, using Mastercard’s network. An executive at a famously corrupt European bank claimed to have dined with Paolucci and gotten his help evading Mastercard’s regulations. It was Paolucci’s job to make sure that the banks and companies using Mastercard’s network were playing by the rules. He bent those rules himself by getting close to the very kinds of high-risk businesses he was supposed to be … [Read more...] about Two-Card Monte: Why Mastercard And Visa Rarely Shut Down Scammers Who Are Ripping Off Consumers

Cyprus farmers spill milk in protest over halloumi cheese protection
Goat and sheep herders burned bales of hay and spilt milk outside Cyprus' Presidential Palace on Tuesday in a protest over the traditional Cypriot cheese -- Halloumi. The rubbery cheese was given protected designation of origin product, or PDO status last April, meaning it can only be produced in Cyprus under strict criteria, preventing imitators worldwide from copying it. But farmers are angry over delays in the PDO's implementation. They claim there has been a lack of audits in its production with ingredients such as powdered milk being used. Halloumi’s PDO file states it must be produced with goat and sheep milk produced by local breeds. "We're against violence, but logic goes out the window when we're hungry and our animals are dying," a farmer said. Another stressed: "If the government doesn't want us, they can compensate people and we'll change profession". Could halloumi be a diplomatic driving force in Cyprus?
