Persona 4 Golden review – the social network
If you read our recent report on console sales in Japan you would’ve seen, in stark numerical form, exactly the depth of hole the PS Vita finds itself in. In Japan the fastest-selling game so far for the Vita has been Persona 4 Golden: an enhanced port of a four-year-old PlayStation 2 game. If you want to be uncharitable that probably says more about the Vita’s currently niche appeal than sales figures ever could. If you want to be entirely honestly though, you’d have to admit that Persona 4 Golden is one of the best role-playing games ever made. Although this is technically still a spin-off from the Shin Megami Tensei series its links to Persona 3 are obscure and references to the other games almost non-existent. The basic set-up is the same as previous Persona titles though, as you play an apparently ordinary secondary school student who is moved from the busy city to a smaller rural town. At first it seems a perfectly ordinary place, with the Japanese setting making … [Read more...] about Persona 4 Golden review – the social network
Report: Hunter Biden Used Anti-Black Racial Slurs In Multiple Messages To ‘White, $845-Per-Hour Lawyer’ | The Daily Wire
According to a new report from the Daily Mail, Hunter Biden sent multiple messages to his “white, $845-per-hour lawyer” which included anti-black racist slurs, as well as other racist comments. One text exchange from January 2019 with corporate attorney George Mesires includes the president’s son saying, “I only love you because you’re a black,” and “true dat n***a,” using an anti-black racial slur. A month earlier, Hunter Biden allegedly wrote, “how much money do I owe you. Because (sic) n***a you better not be charging me Hennessy rates.” After Mesires responded, “That made me snarf my coffee,” Hunter wrote, “That’s what im saying ni…” cutting off the racial slur “mid-word” and then texting an image. “ The picture was not downloaded on Hunter’s laptop, from which the text exchange was recovered by DailyMail.com,” noted the piece, adding that the response to the mystery image by Mesires was, “Why are you so tan?” “I’m sorry for sexting you accidentally that … [Read more...] about Report: Hunter Biden Used Anti-Black Racial Slurs In Multiple Messages To ‘White, $845-Per-Hour Lawyer’ | The Daily Wire

Andrew Bailey faces Bank of England mutiny over staff pay rise
Staff at the Bank of England are to demand a major pay rise in the face of surging inflation, despite pleas for restraint on wages from their own Governor. The trade union Unite is consulting staff on Threadneedle Street this summer about securing a “decent pay rise” to cushion the blow of soaring living costs. Staff received just a 1.5pc increase this year, far below the 9.1pc rate of inflation reached in May. Mutiny at the Bank of England over pay would prove deeply embarrassing for Andrew Bailey, the Governor, after he urged UK workers not to demand large wage increases in remarks criticised by unions and politicians. The Bank’s policymakers fear that a surge in pay packets will fuel a wage-price spiral that prolongs painfully high inflation. Unite, which has 600 members at the Bank, said this year’s pay deal was agreed “before inflation started to soar” but that it will demand a bigger boost to help with the living costs crunch. Steve O’Donnell, Unite regional officer, … [Read more...] about Andrew Bailey faces Bank of England mutiny over staff pay rise
The Lawless Frontier
This past April in Quetta, the bleached-gray, drought-stricken capital of the Pakistani border province of Baluchistan, I awoke to explosions and gunfire. In search of the violence, my translator, Jamil, and I jumped into a four-wheel-drive Toyota and raced through the section of town inhabited by Pashtoon tribesmen. Suddenly we were surrounded by Pakistani soldiers, who forced us out of the car and pointed assault rifles in our faces. While they searched us, I saw two other soldiers with automatic weapons run along a high wall a few feet from where we stood. Shots rang out from inside the adjacent compound. By 11:00 a.m. five people had been killed and twenty wounded, and a large cache of weapons had been confiscated in a raid on the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami (Pashtoon National People's Party), a group supporting an independent "Pashtoonistan" created out of Pakistani territory. The party stood accused of murders and kidnapping. Security forces claimed victory, but reports later … [Read more...] about The Lawless Frontier
Shapps: Rail strikes ‘could be easily settled’
By Katy Austin Published 3 days ago comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said that rail strikes could be "easily settled" by modernising "antiquated" working practices. He described calls for him to intervene to settle the ongoing dispute between the RMT transport union and rail employers as a "red herring" and a "stunt". Outdated practices "had to end" for a resolution to be possible, he said. But the RMT union said that Mr Shapps was "talking complete nonsense". In an interview with the BBC, Mr Shapps acknowledged that he and the Treasury had set an overall mandate, which dictated how much money was available, and that he had final sign-off on what was agreed. But he said he didn't, and shouldn't, interfere with the detail of negotiations between the RMT and the industry, saying employers … [Read more...] about Shapps: Rail strikes ‘could be easily settled’
Essex lorry deaths: Agony builds for Vietnamese families
By Jonathan Head Published 28 October 2019 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Inside the modest home of Le Van Ha there is wrenching despair, as his family tries to come to terms with the likelihood that he was inside the ill-fated container in Essex where 39 people were found dead. His grandmother stares into space, covering her face with her hands. His wife Ha sits unspeaking, refusing the entreaties to eat something. His father Le Minh Tuan hugs his young grandson in desperation, and just weeps. Le Van Ha's story was, until the disastrous end of his journey, very typical of a young man from this poor and mainly agricultural part of Vietnam. He followed a path trodden by thousands of others, overseas in search of better-paid work, leaving for Europe three months ago, just before the birth of his second son. Why do Vietnamese people make hazardous journeys to the … [Read more...] about Essex lorry deaths: Agony builds for Vietnamese families
The iPhone turns 15: a look at the past (and future) of one of the 21st century’s most influential devices
Today marks 15 years since Apple’s co-founder, Steve Jobs, revealed the very first iPhone to the world. It has become Apple’s defining product and, many would argue, the flagship device around which the entire company is positioned . A decade and a half later, there are few products that have managed to reach a similar level of brand recognition. Announced to an eager audience in 2007, the iPhone has revolutionised how we communicate and even how we live day to day. And this year, we’re expected the 14th iteration of the device to be announced some time in September. The large-screen revolution The iPhone was released in the United States in June 2007, and in a further six countries in November (but notably not in Australia). From the launch of Mac computers in the 1970s to the iPod in 2001, Apple already knew how to engage with its audience – and how to encourage extraordinary levels of hype when launching a product . Early reviews for the iPhone were … [Read more...] about The iPhone turns 15: a look at the past (and future) of one of the 21st century’s most influential devices
