On Monday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear two cases relating to the use of race preferences in college admissions. There are two lawsuits – one against the University of North Carolina the other against Harvard. The group bringing both challenges is Students for Fair Admissions, led by attorney Edward Blum. Harvard is being accused of discriminating against Asian American students in admissions and the group is asking the Supreme Court to also look at whether the school is violating Title VI of the federal Civil Rights Act, which prohibits racial discrimination for places that get federal funding. The University of North Carolina is being accused of violating the Civil Rights Act and the Fourteenth Amendment, which guarantees equal protection under the law. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is reportedly stepping down, which would give President Joe Biden the opportunity to nominate a liberal replacement. Breyer, 83, is retiring at the end of the current court term, people with knowledge on the matter told NBC News on Wednesday. The current term will run through June or early July. He is the high court’s oldest member and one of three liberal justices. Breyer served for 27 years. Liberal activists had urged him to retire for months while Democrats still hold majorities in the House and Senate. They believe that the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had health problems, stayed on the high court too long and should have stepped down while Barack Obama was president. Liberal Justice Ginsburg died of cancer at age 87 in 2020, allowing ex-President Donald Trump to appoint Amy Coney Barrett and increasing the conservative majority on the court. Biden could appoint a replacement who would maintain the existing 6-3 … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to retire, giving Joe Biden a nominee

What’s your money mindset? And how is it holding you back? It’s easy to assume that your personal finances are simply down to how much you earn. But the reality is that most of us have bad habits and unhealthy patterns that influence how we spend and save. That’s why two people earning the exact same salary can feel radically different about their money situation – one can find themselves constantly dipping into their overdraft , while another is an expert budgeter managing to save towards a house deposit. Money coach Sarah McCalden believes this is in large part down to what she describes as your ‘money mindset’. ‘Your money mindset is your unique set of beliefs and your attitude about money and it drives the decisions you make and the actions you take around earning money, spending money, saving money and investing money,’ she tells Metro.co.uk. ‘The way you are with money and the way it is with you, stems from your money mindset.
