By Hannah Richardson Published 21 November 2014 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Pupils at six small Muslim private schools in east London are at risk of extremist views and radicalisation, says Ofsted's chief inspector. Sir Michael Wilshaw said the pupils' "physical and educational welfare is at serious risk" following a series of emergency inspections. He said all the schools focused too heavily on Islamic teachings. One of the schools called Ofsted "unprofessional", while another said its findings did not reflect reality. Education Secretary Nicky Morgan says the schools will be closed down if changes are not made quickly. "We asked Ofsted to carry out these independent school inspections and the findings are very concerning," she said. "While there is no suggestion of a co-ordinated plot, it is clear that these schools are failing children and this … [Read more...] about ‘Radicalisation risk’ at six Muslim private schools, says Ofsted

Sir Bradley Wiggins: Ineos Grenadiers must back ‘leader’ Geraint Thomas at Tour de France
Sir Bradley Wiggins believes Ineos Grenadiers should throw their full support behind Geraint Thomas at the Tour de France , though conceded it is unlikely his former team-mate can win a second yellow jersey. Thomas, who won the Tour in 2018, was named in the British squad's eight-man team on Tuesday, and will share leadership duties with Daniel Martínez of Colombia and Bury-born Adam Yates. Wiggins, however, insists the Welshman deserves to be the team's outright leader at the Tour, which starts in Denmark on July 1 . In the absence of an obvious challenger to defending champion Tadej Pogacar and his Slovenian compatriot Primoz Roglic, who will arrive in Copenhagen in fine form having won this month's Critérium du Dauphiné , Ineos Grenadiers will start the race with multiple leaders. “In Adam, Dani and Geraint we have three fantastic GC [general classification] heavyweights who can mount a real challenge. They have proved their form across the season and are lining up … [Read more...] about Sir Bradley Wiggins: Ineos Grenadiers must back ‘leader’ Geraint Thomas at Tour de France
Steph Houghton determined to overcome injury in time for England tilt at Euros title
Fresh from being named in Sarina Wiegman’s 28-strong provisional squad for this summer’s home Euros, Steph Houghton summed up her side’s uncomfortable injury situation in one succinct sentence. “When you've got the Euros, there's no other option but to be positive and keep carrying on,” she told Telegraph Sport earlier this week. It is that stoic attitude that Wiegman will have to adopt as she attempts to plot her side’s path to Euros glory without a cluster of big names that have formed the spine of England’s squad in bygone years. Jordan Nobbs became the first high-profile casualty this week after being ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury. Jill Scott, so often described as the glue which holds England’s midfield together and who on Wednesday announced she would be leaving Manchester City when her contract ends next month, is also another doubt. There is striker Fran Kirby, who also faces a race against time to make Wiegman’s slimmed-down squad of 23 players, having not … [Read more...] about Steph Houghton determined to overcome injury in time for England tilt at Euros title

Natalie Portman on ‘breaking boundaries’ and the ‘pervasive queerness’ in Thor: Love and Thunder
Here comes the girl. In Marvel’s latest outing, Thor: Love And Thunder, Chris Hemsworth’s Asgard warrior sees old flame Dr Jane Foster pick up his hammer and gain superpowers. ‘It was definitely pretty radical,’ says Natalie Portman, who returns as Foster, adopting the new moniker the Mighty Thor. ‘I think Taika [Waititi, the director] and Marvel were like, “OK, so now you’re turning 40, let’s make you a superhero!” ‘Definitely unexpected that this would happen at this point in my life but very, very cool that it did.’ Portman is in London for the premiere of this latest Thor movie. So too is Waititi, who knocked it out of the park with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and does the same here on an exhilarating Guns N’ Roses-scored galactic adventure. Oddly, both have only now discovered that GN’R are currently touring the UK. ‘One of my big wishes is that they come see the film,’ says Waititi, sporting a flower-print jumpsuit and medallion. Portman agrees: ‘I definitely had a school … [Read more...] about Natalie Portman on ‘breaking boundaries’ and the ‘pervasive queerness’ in Thor: Love and Thunder
For the Big Ten, the Money Was Just Too Tempting
The coronavirus pandemic is still ravaging America, just as it was in August, when the college presidents and chancellors of the Big Ten Conference decided against playing football in the fall. The only thing that’s changed is that the same leaders now feel far more comfortable with the risks. The Big Ten’s announcement this week that college football will begin the weekend of October 23 isn’t cause for celebration, but rather an indication of how easily money shifts priorities. Without football, the Big Ten and its member schools were in jeopardy of losing up to $1 billion in revenue . Last month, the Big Ten was willing to set a brave example. It decided that its members, most of which are large public universities in the Midwest, would play no football this fall. But instead of being applauded for exhibiting farsighted, selfless leadership, the Big Ten has spent its hiatus being scolded by fans and parents , sued by players , and criticized by coaches . Meanwhile, … [Read more...] about For the Big Ten, the Money Was Just Too Tempting
