Antonio Rudiger made his mind up to quit Chelsea while Frank Lampard was still manager. That is the view of former Arsenal and England forward Paul Merson, who reckons Rudiger is the one player the Blues can't afford to lose. Merson, a Chelsea fan, thinks the Stamford Bridge club will have a hard time replacing the Germany defender, who is leaving on a free this summer after turning down a new deal. But he reckons current boss Thomas Tuchel is not to blame for Rudiger's decision to quit - because it was under Lampard that things turned sour for him. Former Blues boss Lampard, now at Everton , fell out with Rudiger and then refused to pick him only for the defender to make a comeback after he was sacked. Writing in his Daily Star column , Merson said: "Rudiger is the one player Chelsea couldn't afford to lose, and he is risking the wrath of the fans by deciding to leave. He is turning down a lot of money and leaving them in the lurch - but let's be honest it's been on … [Read more...] about Chelsea learn the moment Antonio Rudiger decided to leave as blame game begins

Red Bull chief takes dig at Carlos Sainz as F1 cost cap row with Ferrari heats up
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has hit back at Mattia Binotto’s claim that they could be facing a Formula 1 cost cap crisis caused by the speed at which their car is being developed, and has taken a dig at the iffy form of Carlos Sainz in the process. Ferrari team principal Binotto made the claim that Red Bull could effectively run out of money to spend after seeing his squad overtaken on pace by their rivals at the last two F1 races at Imola and Miami, which were comfortably won by current world champion Max Verstappen. The Italian outfit still leads both championships thanks to Red Bull’s early season reliability problems, which have cost Verstappen two second places finishes, but a raft of car upgrades at the past two events has seen Christian Horner’s team take a significant stride forward. The RB18 is now lighter than it was at the beginning of the campaign, and its increased straight line speed gives it a significant advantage over Ferrari’s F1-75. Christian Horner makes F1 2022 title prediction between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes the the battle for the 2022 Formula 1 world championship between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc could ‘go all the way’ to the end of the campaign. The Monegasque leads the Dutchman in the standings after the opening five rounds of the season, with every race so far having been won by one of the two men. Leclerc is at top spot despite taking two wins compared to Verstappen’s three, with the current world champion beset by reliability issues in Bahrain and Australia which forced him to retire and cost him a likely minimum of 36 points. The gap is 19 points as things stand, with Verstappen closing in on Leclerc thanks to the upgrades Red Bull has made to its RB18 car, which has rendered it around three tenths quicker per lap than the Ferrari and given it a significant straight line speed advantage. Red Bull’s machinery is low significantly lighter than it was at the beginning of the campaign thanks to the developments … [Read more...] about Christian Horner makes F1 2022 title prediction between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc
The Most Important Alliance You’ve Never Heard Of
In Venezuela, students have been killed while protesting against the government of Nicolás Maduro, who is jailing opposition leaders and just closed a television station that dared broadcast the demonstrations. Argentina is irresponsibly racing toward a dangerous economic cliff. The Brazilian economy is in recession and 2014 will mark its fourth consecutive year of subpar growth, as the country reels from its largest capital flight in more than 10 years. Amid all the bad news in the region, the presidents of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru met with little fanfare in Cartagena last week to seal an economic pact launched in 2012. They call their project the Pacific Alliance, and it will soon include Costa Rica and possibly several other countries. The four founding members are the most successful economies in Latin America; they boast the region's highest economic-growth rates and lowest inflation rates. Together, they represent 36 percent of the region’s economy, 50 percent … [Read more...] about The Most Important Alliance You’ve Never Heard Of
The Atlantic: A History
I would like to take you back to a certain time in the young life of our republic—a time that was filled with a deep sense of foreboding, a grim expectation that our national life was about to change radically, and a giddy appreciation nonetheless of the possibilities held out by the rapid advance of human knowledge. It was a time that has perhaps more than a little in common with the times we inhabit now. The year was 1857. Railroads did not yet cross the North American continent, but everyone knew that one day soon they would. The publication of Darwin's Origin of Species was two years away, but loud rumblings in the halls of science had already warned the keepers of religious faith that serious challenges lay ahead. The largest wave of immigration in the nation's history was pouring through the cities of the eastern seaboard. Though he would become President in four years, Abraham Lincoln in 1857 was no more widely known nationally than any former one-term Congressman is today. … [Read more...] about The Atlantic: A History
The Rise and Fall of an All-Star Crew of Jewel Thieves
In March 2019 , the retired police detective Mike Crowley met me in the lobby of a hotel near the Miami Dolphins’ stadium. Crowley, a 71-year-old Vietnam vet, was wearing shorts, a white undershirt, and a camouflage baseball hat that said MARINE in block caps. Over the course of three hours, he sipped a single rum and Coke. Four years earlier, Crowley said, he’d noticed a pattern in a string of jewelry-store robberies happening all over Florida: The same means of entry had been used every time. As he spoke, I eyed a large stack of paperwork teetering on the table in front of us, including thick folders labeled DRILL TEAM in black marker. At first, Crowley had had multiple suspects for these crimes. He walked me through a laundry list of itinerant safecrackers who had passed through Florida in recent years, pulling off heists in various cities throughout the state. Florida, seen through Crowley’s eyes, is a migratory stopover for the most elite burglars and safe teams. If you … [Read more...] about The Rise and Fall of an All-Star Crew of Jewel Thieves
Can you think yourself to better mental health? New research offers a clue
One of the many qualities Deborah James displays in her battle with bowel cancer is a positive attitude. This inner belief demonstrates a real strength that few would doubt has impacted her journey from diagnosis to end of life care. Sadly, this positive mental attitude can only take her and those like her so far, it can’t stop the inevitable advance of terminal disease. Just like a physical health problem, a mental health one can make you feel impotent in the way it develops. So its encouraging to see new research from Denmark suggesting that if an individual believes they can improve their mental well-being, this will have a positive effect on their health. While this may seem obvious, there has been little evidence so far to support the idea. Most of what we have relied on has been individual anecdotes. Having interviewed thousands of people the researchers found that those who scored highest on a scale assessing self-belief were more likely to enjoy good … [Read more...] about Can you think yourself to better mental health? U.S. rejects “reproductive health” terms in WHO coronavirus response resolution, says there’s no “international right to abortion”
The United States largely supported an international COVID-19 response resolution but took issue with the inclusion of language about sexual and reproductive health. A draft resolution on the COVID-19 response put forth during the 73rd World Health Assembly on Tuesday called on member states to engage in a number of behaviors in the context of the pandemic. Among those actions were to maintain the uninterrupted and safe services for "mother and child health and sexual and reproductive health" and provide assistance to other countries. The U.S. disassociated itself from the language in paragraphs 7.5 and 9.4 of the resolution, saying that they "do not accept references to 'sexual and reproductive health'" or language that may suggest "access to abortion is part of population and individual level health services." "There is no international right to abortion, nor is there any duty on the part of States to finance or facilitate abortion," the U.S. said. "As President [Donald] Trump … [Read more...] about U.S. rejects “reproductive health” terms in WHO coronavirus response resolution, says there’s no “international right to abortion”
