Paul Pogba has been ruled out of Manchester United’s Premier League match against Liverpool, with Ole Gunnar Solskjær also expecting David de Gea will be unavailable. The absence of two of key players for Sunday is a sizeable blow as the manager seeks to arrest a form slump in which United have not won in the league for more than a month. Yet Pogba has not recovered from a foot injury while De Gea requires a scan after sustaining what appeared to be a groin problem in Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Sweden on Tuesday. “David needs a scan,” Solskjær told Sky Sports. “I think he’ll be out. It certainly looked like it anyway judging on last night so it’s one of those things.” Of Pogba, the Norwegian said: “He had a scan after the Arsenal game [at the end of last month] and maybe needed a few weeks’ rest in a boot so hopefully he won’t be too long, but he won’t make this game, no.”Solskjær may … [Read more...] about Paul Pogba and David de Gea set to miss Manchester United v Liverpool

Mario Mandzukic, without a minute of competitive football since May, is top of Manchester United’s shopping list in January. The Croatian is more out of favour at Juventus than Paul Simon at an Art Garfunkel gig, and seems set to sit on the sidelines until the January transfer window rolls around, having been left out entirely of the Old Lady’s Champions League squad. United, meanwhile, are woefully short of options up top, with Tony Martial injured, Mason Greenwood a bit, um, green, and Marcus Rashford seemingly doing his best work these days off the left flank. Rumours are rampant that United already have a verbal agreement to sign Mandzukic in January, with the 33-year-old commanding a £9m fee and a £85,000-a-week contract. Ed Woodward always gets what he wants. One might wonder why United don’t go after Edinson Cavani, a younger, more prolific striker, who would also be available for zilch come the end of the season once his contract with PSG is up. … [Read more...] about Football transfer rumours: Mario Mandzukic to Manchester United?

Liverpool will have Alisson available for the visit to Manchester United on Sunday after their first-choice goalkeeper stepped up his recovery from injury during the international break. The Premier League leaders have been without their influential keeper since the opening game of the season but, nine weeks after damaging a calf muscle against Norwich, the 27-year-old is expected to reclaim his place at Old Trafford. Alisson has undergone an intensive and individually tailored training programme over the past week without repercussions. The Brazil international, named Uefa’s goalkeeper of 2018-19 during his injury lay-off, is fit to replace Adrián, who has proven an impressive deputy for Jürgen Klopp’s side and boasts a 100% record in the Premier League as a Liverpool player. Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said that Paul Pogba's lacklustre performances for struggling Manchester United are a result of the player not being fully fit, while also doubting his side's ability to win titles. The midfielder has played only twice since August and missed United's loss to Newcastle on Sunday as well as their drab 0-0 draw against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League last week, owing to a recurring ankle injury. They sit just two points above the relegation zone, in 12th place, in the Premier League and have a trip to table-topping Liverpool to look forward to after the international break.
