Iceland is giving over-60s a 10% discount on food shops every Tuesday

May 21, 2022 by www.dailystar.co.uk

Supermarket chain Iceland has announced that customers aged over 60 will now receive a 10% discount on groceries every Tuesday. There will be no minimum spend for shoppers to get the reduced cost, but senior customers will need to provide proof of their age. This could include a driving licence or senior bus or rail card. The discount will be available in-store at both Iceland and The Food Warehouse. Iceland claims to be the first UK supermarket to introduce such a discount after Age UK research found that three-quarters of older people were worried about the current cost of living. It’s no surprise that pensioners and retirees are fearful about being able to afford groceries considering the current level of inflation, fuel price hikes and energy crisis. Iceland is also looking at rolling out £30 vouchers to those receiving a state pension after doing so at a regional level at Christmas. Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland, said: “We have a long history of … [Read more...] about Iceland is giving over-60s a 10% discount on food shops every Tuesday

Iceland to launch over-60s discount as cost of living soars

May 19, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 3 days ago comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Iceland is to launch a new discount for shoppers who are over 60, as soaring prices hit household budgets. The supermarket chain said it would offer over-60s 10% off every Tuesday to support its older customers through the cost of living crisis. The move comes as supermarkets battle for customers, with prices rising at their fastest rate for 40 years. Morrisons and Asda, which have been losing shoppers to discounters Aldi and Lidl, have already cut prices. Grocery prices were 5.9% higher in April than a year ago, according to research company Kantar . That figure was the biggest increase since December 2011, with supply chain issues, increased raw material costs and the war in Ukraine all contributing to rising food prices. Why are prices rising so quickly? Five … [Read more...] about Iceland to launch over-60s discount as cost of living soars

Cost of living: Energy chief says any windfall tax should fall upon ‘those with the broadest shoulders’

May 22, 2022 by news.sky.com

The boss of energy company E.ON has said any windfall tax in the UK should fall upon "those with the broadest shoulders" as consumers face a doubling in prices. Michael Lewis, E.ON's chief executive, also said energy regulator Ofgem needed to look again at why prepayment meter customers are having to pay more for their energy than direct debit customers. "We've lobbied for a social tariff. We would like to see the poorest customers getting a better deal, but in the end this is regulated by Ofgem," Mr Lewis told BBC One's Sunday Morning. Read more: How much are things going up? Use our spending calulator He said the company had surveyed 500 customers and found 71% of people were concerned about their energy bills, with 66% reducing their heating and about a third spending less on food as a result. Family of Brit struck down with brain haemorrhage battling to bring him home from Cambodia

May 16, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

The family of a British pensioner struck down with a brain haemorrhage are in a state of desperation as they battle to bring him home from Cambodia. Richard Kiddle, 69, suffered a stroke on May 1 which left him paralysed in half of his body. The ex-pat, a retired electrician from Norfolk, England, was rushed to a hospital in the capital Phnom Penh - where he has been living for the past two weeks. However, his family have been told that his insurance company will not cover his treatment in the Southeast Asian country. Richard's relatives decided to take him home instead through a subsidised medical program at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital - which would cost at least 16,000 GBP. Richard's family have been told that his insurance company will not cover his treatment in the Southeast Asian country ( Image: ViralPress) But when the money was ready and he was about to fly home on May 15, Richard unexpectedly developed pneumonia. Net zero strategy: The key policies in the Government’s ambitious plan to be more sustainable

April 22, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

One thing that many people will be thinking about this Earth Day is how to be more sustainable - with many cutting down on their car usage. Half of journeys in towns and cities must be walked or cycled by 2030 as part of a £26 billion programme to cut the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. Electric cars will not “solve all our problems”, the Government said in the first comprehensive document revealing how it plans to meet targets to reduce net carbon emissions to 78 per cent by 2035. In October 2021, the Government admitted more investment and regulation would be necessary to meet the target, but said its Net Zero strategy put the UK on the path to decarbonisation. A £2 billion “active travel” fund will invest in bike lanes and low-traffic neighbourhoods, with walking and cycling becoming the “natural first choice”, it says. A new £620 million fund will continue to provide grants for electric vehicles as well as new on-street charging stations to help those without their … [Read more...] about Net zero strategy: The key policies in the Government’s ambitious plan to be more sustainable

Cost of living: Two-child families paying £400 a month more

May 22, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Callum Thomson & Noor Nanji Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Basic goods and services for a typical family with two young children are about £400 a month more expensive than they were last year, new data suggests. Energy prices added about £120 to families' monthly costs as price caps rose and cheap tariffs ended. Pay is rising more slowly than prices , forcing many families to make tough spending choices. The data from Loughborough University is based on what focus groups deem a minimum acceptable standard of living . As well as the essentials needed to survive, like food, rent and heating, the budgets include things the focus groups believe are needed to take part in society, such as internet access, school trips and an annual family holiday in the UK. The figures do not represent an average family's monthly spending, because … [Read more...] about Cost of living: Two-child families paying £400 a month more
