More info Liz Truss has hit out at Rishi Sunak’s plans to tackle the cost-of-living crisis during ITV’s leadership debate. The Foreign Secretary added: "We need to do better we need to take on Whitehall." She said: “Rishi, you have raised taxes to the highest level in 70 years. That is not going to drive economic growth. You raised national insurance even though people like me opposed it in Cabinet at the time, because we could have afforded to fund the NHS through general taxation. “The fact is that raising taxes at this moment will choke off economic growth, it will prevent us getting the revenue we need to pay off the debt.” Trending … [Read more...] about Tory leadership LIVE: Rishi fuming as Truss goes straight for him ‘Taxes will choke us!’

Children’s homes close after BBC reveals failures
By Noel Titheradge Published 13 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Three children's homes have closed and two more rated "inadequate" following a BBC investigation into a firm making huge profits. The homes, previously rated as good or outstanding, were re-inspected after the BBC found children had reported being groomed and assaulted. We can also reveal the company failed to fully report some serious incidents. Calcot Services for Children does not accept the BBC's allegations and says profits were not excessive. Following the BBC's investigation in June , Ofsted re-inspected seven of the company's homes in southern England. We have now learned the regulator for England has rated five homes "inadequate" - and three of those have now closed. At one, "serious and widespread failures" were found with staff not providing some one-to-one care which … [Read more...] about Children’s homes close after BBC reveals failures
Kate Greville lied to Ryan Giggs about having cancerous cells, court hears
Follow today's live court action R yan Giggs's ex-girlfriend has revealed that she lied to the former footballer about having cancerous cells detected in a smear test so that she "would not have to have sex with him". In late October 2020, just days before an alleged headbutt at the centre of the trial, Kate Greville, 36, told a friend she was going to end her contraception in secret. When Mr Giggs became suspicious that something was afoot, the PR executive told him: "I had a smear test…And I had cancerous cells, I have to go to hospital on Thursday." The ex-footballer responded in shock, and asked her what exactly the test had shown, to which she responded "high-grade dyskaryosis". Chris Daw QC, for the defence, said that the pair continued to have "regular and enthusiastic sex" aftwerwards, and referring to the contraceptive coil that Ms Greville was getting removed without letting her then boyfriend know, "Your plan was to get pregnant by Mr Giggs, wasn’t it? "No, … [Read more...] about Kate Greville lied to Ryan Giggs about having cancerous cells, court hears
The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president
ANALYSIS: For the first time since leaving office, former US president Donald Trump has started getting specific about what he would do if he wins a second term in the White House. The pitches he's made onstage over the past month in speeches from Washington, DC, to Dallas to Las Vegas are a stark contrast from ordinary stump speeches. He promises a break from American history if elected, with a federal government stacked with loyalists and unleashed to harm his perceived enemies. There has never been a potential candidate like Trump : a defeated former president whose followers attacked the Capitol, who still insists he never lost, and who openly pledges revenge on those he views as having wronged him. As his 2016 campaign and administration showed time and again, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, he and his aides worked furiously to translate rally slogans into official policy - whether or not there were legal or political barriers to overcome. And if Trump does … [Read more...] about The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president

What Russia got right about the coronavirus—and what it can share with the world | Opinion
Since the start of the coronavirus crisis, Russia had received criticism in international media over its response to the pandemic. In reality, the country is setting an example others can learn from in many vital areas. Russia is one of the global leaders in testing for the virus, in producing efficient drugs and it is rapidly approaching mass production of its own vaccine. The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), the country's sovereign wealth fund, has played a key role in fighting the virus in Russia. We learned about the threat in late January from our network of international partners, advised the government in its assessment of it and moved ahead with investment. With countries like the United States predicted to reach a staggering 100,000 cases a day, it is important that we quickly develop focused solutions based on proven technologies with no time to spare. We believe that RDIF has now developed key elements of such a practical solution. Working jointly with some of … [Read more...] about What Russia got right about the coronavirus—and what it can share with the world | Opinion
The tech helping to bring you your morning coffee
By Luana Ferreira Published 25 July Share close Share page Copy link About sharing For an estimated one billion people around the world drinking coffee is a daily regime. Yet what many coffee lovers might not know is that they are often drinking a brew made, at least in part, from Brazilian beans. "Brazilian beans have popular characteristics, and are known for their body and sweetness," says Christiano Borges, boss of the country's largest grower, Ipanema Coffees. "Therefore, many coffee blends in the world use our coffee as a base." Brazil is far and away the world's largest grower of coffee beans. It accounts for more than one third of all global supplies, or 37% in 2020, to be exact. In second place is Vietnam with 17% of supplies. Some 70% of Brazil's coffee plants are the highly-priced arabica species, used in fresh coffee. The remaining 30% are robusta, which is … [Read more...] about The tech helping to bring you your morning coffee
The Only Way For Some People To Stay in San Francisco Is To Steal
SAN FRANCISCO — Jordan Smith had dreamed of living in San Francisco for as long as he can remember. He grew up in Stockton, a flat industrial suburb surrounded by agricultural fields in the Central Valley where his mom was a third-grade teacher, his dad a civil servant. Smith had what he described as “an almost Norman Rockwell–like childhood.” When his mom would take him to visit San Francisco an hour-and-a-half drive away, he’d put on his Sunday best — button-down, slacks, shiny shoes, and a blazer to ward off the wind chill. “My mom always said, ‘When you’re going to San Francisco, you gotta dress up because it’s what you do when you’re going to the city,’” recalled Smith, who is now 42. “There’s so much different people and different cultures and different lifestyles in the city. Just taking it all in was amazing.” Each time they crossed the Bay Bridge and the undulating, glassy skyline emerged over the shimmering water, his heart raced, and each time the city receded in the … [Read more...] about The Only Way For Some People To Stay in San Francisco Is To Steal
Warning for thousands on Universal Credit over major change that could see payments STOPPED
A MAJOR change to Universal Credit is set to affect thousands of people within weeks. They face tougher rules, and if not followed, it could result in payments being reduced or stopped altogether in the worst case. Around 115,000 people on Universal Credit will be moved from the "light touch" work group to the "intensive work search" regime. This means they will be expected to have more meetings with work coaches and increase their search for work or take on more hours. Anyone who doesn't follow the stricter rules could face sanctions .
