Drought declared in south west Wales, as hosepipe ban starts
By Steffan Messenger Published 17 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A drought has been officially declared in parts of Wales after an extended period of dry weather and low rainfall caused water levels to plummet. It comes as the first hosepipe ban in Wales for more than 30 years also comes into force from 08:00 BST. The ban covers Pembrokeshire and parts of Carmarthenshire. The ban means people will not be allowed to water their plants or wash their cars using a hose. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said the threshold to trigger drought status in south-west Wales was met on Friday. The decision was taken by NRW and the Welsh government's Drought Liaison Group after discussing the impact the prolonged heatwave had wreaked on the environment, particularly rivers and reservoirs. The areas affected include north Ceredigion, Teifi, Pembrokeshire, … [Read more...] about Drought declared in south west Wales, as hosepipe ban starts

David White Once a successful real estate agent, Aaron Drever's fall from grace reached its nadir when he was sentenced to two years, two months imprisonment for obtaining by deception, forgery and dishonestly using a document. Aaron Drever was a star of the real estate industry before he accumulated the most censures of any agent on record . A series of brazen – and ultimately failed – business deals followed. His chequered story left many victims, and ended in a prison sentence on Friday. National Correspondent Steve Kilgallon reports. When the Auckland District Court convened to pass sentence on Aaron Drever on July 15, he wasn’t there. Drever’s date with justice had already been deferred eight times. The judge, Evangelos Thomas, observed wearily: “Not many people get it for a third time.” He demanded Drever turn up with a PCR test next time he was … [Read more...] about A life of lurks and lies: the strange world of bankrupt, banned, jailed real estate agent Aaron Drever

Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s determination should on no account be underestimated
One view of Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the business world is that he is an opportunist, an astute trader who likes to buy assets from distressed sellers at low-ball prices. That characterisation - that he is the chemicals industry's equivalent of rag-trade king Sir Philip Green - is rather unfair. Yes, Sir Jim is an exceptionally shrewd buyer of assets, but he has also shown himself to be a careful long-term investor and patient builder of businesses. But he did not get to become Britain's richest man by overpaying for things. That is the context into which news that the Ineos owner has expressed an interest in buying Manchester United should be placed. According to a report on Bloomberg yesterday, the Glazer family - which owns a controlling stake in the OId Trafford club - is considering selling a minority stake. A spokesman for Ineos subsequently made clear: "If the club are for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer." More on Manchester United … [Read more...] about Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s determination should on no account be underestimated

R. Kelly’s living area in Chicago recording studio shut down by judge
R. Kelly was ordered to close down a portion of his Chicago recording studio after city inspectors found a number of building code violations within the property on Tuesday, Chicago Tribune reported the following day. In addition to using the second level of the warehouse as a residence, the infrastructure illegally housed a steam room as well as a sauna. A judge ruled it was clearly evident people were using the space to live although the building is zoned for commercial use only. Prosecutors released photos obtained during a search of the property—which was ordered by Judged Patrice Ball-Reed more than a week ago—that indicated people were indeed living within the space, including images of bathroom toiletries that had been used, piles of clothes on the floor, mattresses and bathrobes hanging on hooks, Chicago Tribune reported. There were also photos of a wet bar, pool tables and other items in what appeared to be a lounge space. Under the judge's orders, Kelly will only … [Read more...] about R. The Only Way For Some People To Stay in San Francisco Is To Steal
SAN FRANCISCO — Jordan Smith had dreamed of living in San Francisco for as long as he can remember. He grew up in Stockton, a flat industrial suburb surrounded by agricultural fields in the Central Valley where his mom was a third-grade teacher, his dad a civil servant. Smith had what he described as “an almost Norman Rockwell–like childhood.” When his mom would take him to visit San Francisco an hour-and-a-half drive away, he’d put on his Sunday best — button-down, slacks, shiny shoes, and a blazer to ward off the wind chill. “My mom always said, ‘When you’re going to San Francisco, you gotta dress up because it’s what you do when you’re going to the city,’” recalled Smith, who is now 42. “There’s so much different people and different cultures and different lifestyles in the city. Just taking it all in was amazing.” Each time they crossed the Bay Bridge and the undulating, glassy skyline emerged over the shimmering water, his heart raced, and each time the city receded in the … [Read more...] about The Only Way For Some People To Stay in San Francisco Is To Steal
‘My baby arrived so fast I had to give birth by myself in the bath – it was easy’
Corinne Card had been hoping for a home water birth when it was time to deliver her youngest child, but when doctors expressed concern that her bump wasn’t as big as they’d like, it looked like those hopes were going to be dashed. The new plan a hospital birth – with a pool if Corinne, 41, was lucky and they weren’t all in use when the time came. However, it seems baby Freddie had other ideas. In the end as, in a roundabout sort of way, he gave his mum the birth she wanted – albeit not exactly as she’d planned. Most home water births happen in a birthing pool with a midwife or two present to help things go smoothly and safely. But in Corinne’s case, the baby arrived way too quickly for any of that to be possible, so she had to make do in the bath on her own while her husband Jon, 45, frantically tried to get help on the phone. ‘Looking back, it was a very strange experience, and I was incredibly lucky that nothing went wrong,’ mum-of-three Corinne tells Metro.co.uk. … [Read more...] about ‘My baby arrived so fast I had to give birth by myself in the bath – it was easy’
