Budding 10-year-old motorists will soon be able to drive a brand new £13,000 Vauxhall Corsa in a new training course held at Thorpe Park . A special road system will be created, with traffic signs, roundabouts and junctions, along with special areas for drivers to practice manoeuvres such as steering, control and parking. Young Driver, which provides driving lessons for 10 to 17-year-olds, will be running events in the Thorpe Park car park in Chertsey on selected weekends from November to March when the theme park is closed. The lessons start on November 11, where youngsters will be taught by highly qualified approved driving instructors in a brand new, dual controlled Vauxhall Corsa SRi - which can cost from £13,445, according to the car manufacturer's price guide. Lessons will focus on safety and encourage youngsters to consider how to drive responsibly, giving them time to perfect the necessary driving skills without the pressures of public roads. WOMEN who each lost a leg in the Alton Towers Smiler rollercoaster crash are suing the owners for millions of pounds. Leah Washington, 20, and Vicky Balch, 23, are claiming "catastrophic personal injury", after they became injured when their carriage ploughed into another stationary one. The Mirror reports Vicky's claim, lodged at the High Court this week, accuses the firm of: "Failing to take any or any adequate care to ensure the reasonable safety of the Claimant whilst on the Smiler." A LAD who was run over by a bin lorry while sunbathing believes his rippling six-pack may have saved his life. Jack Moore was napping in Earlham Park, Norwich, with his girlfriend when they were run over by the two tonne truck that was out collecting rubbish. The 21-year-old suffered a collapsed lung and liver damage but doctors told him the damage could have been worse – and that the fact he is so fit may be behind his survival. Muscular Jack said: “The doctors said I was lucky I had more muscle otherwise I would probably have suffered more injuries. “They said I was very healthy and that was also a big factor in my recovery.” Jack said that he only noticed the truck when it was just a foot away from his head and had no time to react. He told The Mirror: “The front wheel crunched over my stomach which was really mentally distressing. “It was the last thing I expected to happen, I think adrenaline kicked in so I did not feel the pain immediately. … [Read more...] about Lad run over by bin lorry as he sunbathed in park claims his washboard abs saved him
To understand how big a deal Jeremy Thorpe was some four decades ago, it is helpful to transplant him into the modern day. Imagine then a Liberal political leader who burst onto the scene with even more verve and energy and impact than Nick Clegg did in 2010, if you can cast your mind back to Cleggmania. And did so with the result that he almost single-handedly denied either main party a majority at a general election. Imagine too a man with the charisma and style of a character such as Nigel Farage (though far from sharing his politics). Top that lot off with the ready wit and celebrity of the likes of Boris Johnson. He was married to an ex-wife of the cousin of the Queen and he had once toyed with the idea of wedding Princess Margaret. That was Thorpe. Now imagine someone combining those talents and of that stature in national life being put on trial at the Old Bailey on a charge of conspiracy to murder.
