Albanians are exploiting modern slavery laws to avoid deportation after crossing the Channel, government sources have suggested, as figures showed record numbers are claiming to be victims of trafficking. Official data, published on Thursday, shows Albanians are now the top nationality claiming to be victims of modern slavery or trafficking, overtaking UK nationals. They accounted for more than a quarter (27 per cent) of the record 4,171 potential victims of modern slavery referred to the Home Office, under legislation brought in by Theresa May, in the second quarter of this year. The 1,130 Albanians claiming to be victims of trafficking or slavery are now ahead of UK nationals referred to the Home Office, at 1,013 or 24 per cent of the total. Third were Eritreans, substantially lower at 293 or seven per cent. The figures come just days after it emerged that Albanians accounted for nearly four in 10 migrants crossing the Channel over a six-month period this summer even … [Read more...] about Record numbers of Albanians claiming to be victims of slavery ‘to avoid deportation’

Alex Jones ordered to pay $45,200,000 more to Sandy Hook shooting victim’s family
A jury has ordered conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to pay over $45million in punitive damages to the parents of a Sandy Hook school shooting victim after claiming for years that the tragedy was a ‘hoax’. The $45million sum comes one day after the same jury ordered Jones to pay $4million to Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, the parents of 6-year-old victim Jesse Lewis. Jones is scheduled to be back in court next week in Connecticut, where juries will have to decide how much he will have to pay two more families of victims from the 2012 tragedy. Heslin and Lewis originally sought $150million for Jones’ lies, which they argued lead to years of harassment, threats and abuse from Jones’ fans. When he testified on Tuesday, Heslin told the court that one disgruntled fan shot at his home. ‘Two years back, my home was shot up, and my vehicle was shot up in my yard. That’s disturbing,’ Heslin said. ‘He drove by my home shouting out the window “Alex Jones!” and what sounded … [Read more...] about Alex Jones ordered to pay $45,200,000 more to Sandy Hook shooting victim’s family

‘Arthur Knight’: Man in UK accused of being US fugitive ‘tried to organise fake memorial mass by posing as grieving widow’
US detectives hunting a fugitive who they say faked his death and fled to Scotland told a priest to cancel a sham memorial mass. Father Bernard Healy has told Sky News he received a phone call from a 'woman' sounding like Hyacinth Bucket, the character from the comedy Keeping Up Appearances, but police told him it was the fugitive using a "voice disguiser". Nicholas Rossi, whose aliases include Nicholas Alahverdian, is wanted in the state of Utah on rape charges. US authorities believe he's the man based in Glasgow calling himself Arthur Knight , who is now the subject of extradition proceedings. Father Healey, the Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Church in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, had come across Alahverdian as a youngster working at the Rhode Island State House. Sexual violence against women and girls should be treated as a national emergency until it’s been defeated, writes RISHI SUNAK
How serious are we as a society about protecting women and girls? There is a strong cultural consensus, backed up by legislation, that deplores and forbids any form of sexual violence. And yet women and girls continue to be subject to attack. Every case is an outrage that seriously undermines the sense of security to which every female is entitled. As a man, I wouldn't think twice about walking to the shops at night yet my wife and daughters would hesitate – because of the threat posed by other men. That's something I am determined to change. As Chancellor, I made it one of my priorities to boost support for victims. By 2024/25, we will invest £192million a year into victim support, including 1,000 independent sexual violence advisers and 24/7 support for rape victims. I also funded Operation Soteria, a ground-breaking new approach to policing, making police investigations less intrusive for victims and putting them at the forefront so that more perpetrators face justice. … [Read more...] about Sexual violence against women and girls should be treated as a national emergency until it’s been defeated, writes RISHI SUNAK
