Women are active behind the lines in Syria’s civil war
This article first appeared on the Atlantic Council site . Women in the city of Deir Ezzor have supported the Syrian revolution in various ways since its beginning. During the early stages of the revolution, women held active roles, including those that were viewed as exclusively male-dominated, such as carrying weapons in the armed opposition. Despite the seizure of most of the province by the Islamic State militant group (ISIS), women in Deir Ezzor remain actively supportive of the local population and are working to protect other women. In March 2011, the first demonstrations calling for the Syrian regime's ouster took place in Deir Ezzor. Women started to join the protests alongside men early on. By the summer, women had a significant presence in the protests. In August 2011, the Bashar al-Assad regime's army invaded Deir Ezzor. The regime—by working with paramilitary groups (the shabiha ), arresting civilians and increasing the number checkpoints—managed to … [Read more...] about Women are active behind the lines in Syria’s civil war
Joe Biden tests positive for Covid again
Joe Biden, the US president, has tested positive for Covid-19 for a second time just days after he emerged from isolation. On Wednesday, 79-year-old Mr Biden jubilantly announced he had recovered and tested negative for coronavirus following five days of quarantine . On Saturday however, his White House doctor revealed he has once again tested positive for the virus although he is said to be experiencing no symptoms and feels “quite well”. Mr Biden had been taking the medication Paxlovid, which has reported numerous cases of effectively reducing the viral load of Covid only for it to return once the medication is stopped. Mr Biden will now resume isolation procedures once more and his positive test is believed to be “rebound” positivity experienced by some Covid patients, according to physician Dr Kevin O’Connor. Writing on Twitter, he said: Folks, today I tested positive for COVID again. — President Biden (@POTUS) July 30, 2022 The president is fully … [Read more...] about Joe Biden tests positive for Covid again
Prince Harry’s memoir will have to duke it out with competing Royal books
The Duke of Sussex is said to have put the final touches to his memoir, with fans eagerly awaiting his promised “truth”. As he hopes to give the definitive version of his own story, he may wish to hurry up, as Royal biographers old and new vie to tell ever-so-slightly different versions. The next few months will bring a flurry of books tipped to give new insight into the lives and behaviour of the Royals, with authors, ranging from one of the Sussexes’ chief “Royal expert” critics, to the journalist who broke the story of the Kensington Palace bullying row . Prince Harry’s own book is still rumoured to be out in October , but there has been no update from his team or his publishers since it was first announced in July 2021. He has said he is keen to tell the first “accurate and wholly truthful” account of his own life. Sources have indicated that several books due out at around the same time will tell different versions of the latter stages of the Duke’s life in the … [Read more...] about Prince Harry’s memoir will have to duke it out with competing Royal books
UK weather: Drought conditions could last into next year
Drought conditions could last into next year, experts predicted as water levels in reservoirs across England and Wales dropped to record lows. An official drought is expected to be declared across the worst-hit areas of southern England at a meeting between ministers and the water industry on Friday after the region had its driest July since 1836. The announcement could bring more hosepipe bans , see canals ordered to close to boats, and prompt extra measures to protect wildlife. On Thursday, experts said only “exceptional rainfall” in the south and east of England over the autumn and winter would ensure that water resources returned to normal before 2023, meaning restrictions could last into next year. “The autumn-winter period as a whole will be critical to dictating what the water resources position will be as we go into 2023,” said Jamie Hannaford, a hydrologist at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, which advises the Government. A multi-year drought would … [Read more...] about UK weather: Drought conditions could last into next year
Saudi Arabia spurns Biden’s plea to produce more oil
Saudi Arabia has rejected a plea by US president Joe Biden for a major increase in oil production to help ease the cost of living crisis . Prices of the fuel edged higher after the Opec+ alliance, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, announced it had agreed to increase supply by just 100,000 barrels per day from September. Analysts said the move, equivalent to about 86 seconds of daily global oil demand, would do little to ease pressures on the market amid Russia’s war on Ukraine. Raad Alkadiri, managing director for energy, climate, and sustainability at Eurasia Group, told Reuters: “That is so little as to be meaningless. From a physical standpoint it is a marginal blip. As a political gesture it is almost insulting.” Paul Horsnell, head of commodities research at Standard Chartered, told Bloomberg: “A bit mystified as to the point of doing 100,000 barrels a day rather than zero, for practical and measurement purposes it is zero." Brent Crude has climbed 1.2pc today to … [Read more...] about Saudi Arabia spurns Biden’s plea to produce more oil
Watch: Joe Biden gets stuck in his jacket as wife Jill comes to the rescue
Jill Biden had to help Joe into his jacket after the US president struggled to put it back on after leaving his helicopter during a visit to Kentucky. A shaky Mr Biden, who is recovering from a bout of Covid-19, was seen on video trying for 30 seconds to put his arm through the sleeve of his suit, which was being blown by the wind from the Marine One helicopter’s blades. Moments later, the 79-year-old then dropped his signature aviator sunglasses to the ground and had to bend down to pick them up. The president and first lady were in Kentucky to meet with first responders and families who had lost homes after the worst flooding in the state’s history in late July. It was his first official trip after testing positive for Covid-19 last month, after which he was holed up in the White House for more than two weeks in isolation. He tested negative on Sunday and was deemed fit to safely return to public engagement and presidential travel by his doctor. He still appeared to … [Read more...] about Watch: Joe Biden gets stuck in his jacket as wife Jill comes to the rescue

A husband who allegedly said he feels he "missed out" on bonding with his son because the child is " exclusively breastfed " has received a wave of criticism from users on Mumsnet, the U.K.-based online forum. In a post shared by his wife (username JimRoyle) on Mumsnet's Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) subforum , the mom said that she's been "exclusively breastfeeding " their 10-month-old baby and that the couple have had "various challenges" on their "weaning journey."
