Meet Lauren Hemp: England’s breakout star poised to light up this summer’s home Euros
Lauren Hemp has a problem. And, given she is tipped to become one of the breakout stars of England’s European Championship campaign , it is only going to get worse. While on the pitch Hemp plays football with a freedom and confidence that electrifies even the dullest of games , you would have no idea that, inside, she is instinctively shy and reserved. But if there is one aspect the 21-year-old has struggled with in her career, it is the idea that she is a celebrity. Hemp habitually shuns the limelight. She doesn't like being spotted, and values the relative anonymity living in a big city like Manchester gives her. “I don’t really enjoy that side of things,” she admits to Telegraph Sport. “Like when I’m playing, that’s fine, but off [the pitch]… It’s something I guess we are going to have to get used to it - try to embrace it. I’m definitely far more comfortable being spotted in my football kit than in a tracksuit going to the cinema with my friends.” So when Hemp was … [Read more...] about Meet Lauren Hemp: England’s breakout star poised to light up this summer’s home Euros

What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
“D uck and cover!” a mechanized voice screamed. The ground shook and the window rattled. I rolled from my bed to the floor of my trailer and felt for the armor I’d forgotten in my office. I lay there and sweated and swore. The voice from the loudspeaker urged me to get away from the windows. I was inside a tin can. I crawled to the door. My hand was on the knob when I realized I was naked. The next impact knocked the air conditioner to the floor. I grabbed a light-blue cotton robe and bolted. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. I raced along a row of sandbags, one hand holding the robe closed. The duck-and-cover bunkers were 100 feet away. Another series of explosions, and I hit the rocks. I was lying there, panting, when I saw a bright-yellow bunker tucked behind a row of sandbags and palm trees. I was up, running, full out. My robe fell open and flew out behind me. Another hit. I was 20 feet away. Ten. Five. I crashed into the … [Read more...] about What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
Germany to ease immigration laws
The German government is hoping to give over 130,000 migrants trapped in a legal limbo the chance to stay permanently, as part of an overhaul of Germany's immigration system. Chancellor Olaf Scholz 's government on Wednesday agreed on a package of reforms that will open the prospect of residency rights to people who have lived in Germany for more than five years with a so-called "Duldung," or tolerance status. "We are a diverse immigration country. Now we want to become a better integration country," Wrote Interior Minister Nancy Faeser from Scholz's center-left Social Democrat SPD on Twitter. "I want to actively shape migration and integration instead of reluctantly administering them as I have done for the past 16 years," she continued in reference to the previous conservative government's policies. A Duldung is normally issued to people who have been refused asylum but who can't return to their home country for various reasons: These might include the threat of war … [Read more...] about Germany to ease immigration laws
Government won’t enforce accessibility, despite promising legislation to ‘make NZ more accessible’
ROBERT KITCHIN/STUFF Minister for Disability Issues Poto Williams speaks about the future of the new ministry. A disability advocate is frustrated there is no commitment from Government to create enforceable legislation that would improve the lives of those living with a disability. Disability advocate and Access Alliance member Juliana Carvalho said unless accessibility legislation was enforceable, people who require access will continue to live in substandard conditions. Access Alliance is a group of disability organisations who proposed Accessibility Act in Aotearoa . A principle within the proposed act asks that it be enforceable and that it includes an office where people with disabilities can lodge complaints if they encounter obstacles which are in violation of the act. “In 50 years’ time, we will still have the same situation with people like me having to shower on the porch. It’s horrible and undignified,” Carvalho said. READ MORE: Disability … [Read more...] about Government won’t enforce accessibility, despite promising legislation to ‘make NZ more accessible’
