Published 6 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A Chinese attack on Taiwan is not imminent, the top US general says, but the US is watching "very closely". China is clearly developing the capability to attack at some point, but deciding to do so would be a political choice, Gen Mark Milley told the BBC. China says Taiwan is a breakaway province that must be re-unified with the mainland, by force if necessary. It has accused the US of supporting Taiwan's independence, and vowed to "resolutely crush" any such attempt. There has been a marked escalation recently between China and the US - Taiwan's most powerful ally. China has been sending scores of warplanes into Taiwan's air defence zone, while the US has sent naval ships through Taiwan's waters. In May, US President Joe Biden said China was "flirting with danger" by flying its warplanes close to … [Read more...] about Taiwan: China attack not imminent, but US watching closely, says Gen Milley

Beware of fish-hooks in free trade deals
Breakfast It could see a $1.8 billion increase in export revenue for Aotearoa each year. Jim Rose is an economist, and a research fellow with the Taxpayers’ Union. Even the best possible regional trade deal imaginable should be greeted with suspicion. Thoroughly inspect the baggage they carry; environment and labour chapters, stricter intellectual property rights, investor-state dispute settlement processes and revised government procurement rules such as for Pharmac. Start with a sceptical eye, says Nobel prize-winning trade theorist Paul Krugman . Indeed, the only time tariff cuts are suspect is when they are part of a regional trade agreement such as with the European Union , or recently with Britain . READ MORE: Wheta or feta-aaaaaah? Heads of state: A walk among giant presidential busts
If you've always wanted to get close to a head of state, then make your way to this swampy field just outside Historic Williamsburg, Virginia, where gigantic and decaying busts – some 20 feet tall, weighing several tons each – portray every U.S. president from George Washington to George W. Bush. "They're just huge!" one visitor exclaimed. "This whole thing is vibe," said another. But they're an accidental tourist attraction. "You kind of would expect 'em to be, like, in a museum," said Ben. "Instead they're outside, just in the elements." All on the site of Howard Hankins' recycling center. Hankins, who is also a builder, had originally helped construct a park for the busts that opened in 2004 to capitalize on the Williamsburg tourism industry. But just six years later, "The economy hit 'em hard," he said. "They just couldn't keep the doors open. And they called me up and asked me if I'd crush 'em, cause I crush concrete." Correspondent Rita Braver asked, "Why didn't … [Read more...] about Heads of state: A walk among giant presidential busts
Long-missing Alexander Hamilton letter put on public display
A letter written by Alexander Hamilton in 1780 and believed stolen decades ago from the Massachusetts state archives is going back on display — though not exactly in the room where it happened. The founding father's letter will be the featured piece at the Commonwealth Museum's annual July Fourth exhibit, Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin’s office says. It's the first time the public is getting a chance to see it since it was returned to the state after a lengthy court battle. It will be featured alongside Massachusetts' original copy of the Declaration of Independence. Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury who’s been getting renewed attention in recent years because of the hit Broadway musical that bears his name, wrote the letter to the Marquis de Lafayette, the French aristocrat who served as a general in the Continental Army. Dated July 21, 1780, it details an imminent British threat to French forces in Rhode Island. Recommended … [Read more...] about Long-missing Alexander Hamilton letter put on public display
Paratroopers deployment cancelled after alleged orgy in Merville Barracks
The new head of the army has cancelled the deployment of a Parachute Regiment battalion to Kosovo after recent discipline lapses including an alleged orgy in their Colchester base. In a letter to all serving and retired parachute regiment soldiers and their families, Lieutenant General Andrew Harrison, the Colonel Commandant of the Paras, said the new head of the Army had “temporarily lost trust” in the unit’s 3rd battalion. General Sir Patrick Sanders , the Chief of the General Staff (CGS), only took over the top job on Monday of this week. That one of his first decisions has been to publicly shame a historic and influential unit such as the Parachute Regiment will be taken as a signal that Gen Sanders intends to make discipline a key feature of his time as CGS. The move came after a military police investigation was launched last week into an alleged orgy in Merville Barracks, home to the army’s 16 Air Assault Brigade , of which 3 Para is part, and other discipline … [Read more...] about Paratroopers deployment cancelled after alleged orgy in Merville Barracks

Why Ange Lee’s much-maligned Hulk is truly a classic comic-book movie

OPINION: Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to pass, noughties Hollywood was ruled by X-Men and Spider-Man. However, one director dared to try and make the ultimate comic-book-inspired movie and was pilloried by the fan boys. But now, in light of the world's biggest franchise embracing visionaries with different sensibilities (Scott Derrickson, Ryan Coogler, our own Taika Waititi), it's time for Ang Lee's Hulk to be given its proper place in the pantheon of groundbreaking blockbuster cinema. In Defence of: Madonna’s True Blue
It was the album even my father attempted to disavow all knowledge of. When one of my more flamboyant friends called to ask if he could borrow Madge's 1986 album from where I had left it at work, my Dad told him, jokingly, that in no uncertain terms did his son own "that album". He was right – it was actually my older brother's. True Blue was my first, real encounter with the constantly evolving artist born Madonna Louise Ciccone, a musical love-affair that would last for the best part of two decades. Like a Virgin had somewhat passed me by and her deliberately provocative headline-making and relationship with acting enfant terrible Sean Penn didn't exactly endear her to me. But that was before I heard True Blue , a nine-track masterpiece that became a soundtrack to my early teenage years and near daily runs around the hills of Dunedin.
