Baby drowned in bath when mum collapsed from rare reaction to Covid jab
A baby girl drowned in the bath after her mother fainted during an adverse reaction to a Covid jab, an inquest has heard. Louise Atkinson blacked out while nine-month-old Eleanor, also known as Ellie, was in three inches of water. The lawyer had received her first dose of the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine the previous day. Ellie’s father James found the mother and daughter unresponsive in the bathroom when he returned from a trip to the dentist. He managed to wake his wife by shaking her shoulder, but Ellie was ‘blue’ and face down in the water. Mr Atkinson called 999 as he tried in vain to carry out CPR on his daughter. Emergency services arrived six minutes later at their home in Christchurch, Dorset. Ellie was flown by helicopter to Southampton General Hospital, but was pronounced dead four hours later on March 23, 2021. A post-mortem examination found that ‘on the balance of probabilities’ the baby’s cause of death was inhalation of water or drowning. Giving birth can be traumatic – who checks on mothers?
Warwick Smith/STUFF Kate Hicks speaks about creating Birth Trauma Aotearoa Trust to advocate for parents who have been through a traumatic birth. Up to one in three women experience mental trauma after giving birth, but overloaded maternal mental health services mean they are often left to fend for themselves. Cecile Meier reports. Lyla Hughes is almost 4, but her mother’s emotions are still raw as she recounts her daughter’s birth. Erin Hughes sobs as she talks about waiting six hours to hold Lyla for the first time after she was born via emergency C-section . That was the hardest part, she says. Harder than having a surgeon rummage through her belly to extract a stuck Lyla, harder than having a premature baby and harder than fighting to get breastfeeding going. Hughes was 33 weeks pregnant when baby Lyla stopped moving. No10’s independent Covid inquiry WILL probe impact of lockdowns on mental health and young people
No10's long-awaited Covid inquiry will examine how badly lockdowns impacted the nation's mental health and children. Officials today revealed the scope of the independent probe would be broadened to include the wider impacts of pandemic restrictions. There were fears the investigation would fall into the same trap as earlier reports that focused on lives lost directly to Covid and ruled the UK should have locked down for longer. Since then, data has accrued suggesting the benefits of lockdowns were overblown and the wider consequences were underestimated. The inquiry, which already included 26 topics, is being chaired by Baroness Heather Hallett. She will have the power to summon witnesses to give evidence under oath — even the Prime Minister. After reviewing more than 20,000 responses to her original draft terms of reference last month, the main complaint was that they were too narrow. The inquiry will now also examine the pandemic’s unequal impact on ethnic minority … [Read more...] about No10’s independent Covid inquiry WILL probe impact of lockdowns on mental health and young people

Dan Walker among BBC presenters with nice little earners on the side
BBC presenters are earning up to £20,000 a day by carrying out non-BBC work on the side, according to a register of outside interests. Dan Walker, the BBC Breakfast presenter, hosted two events in a single day, each paying up to £10,000. Huw Edwards appeared at four events in the space of a month, making at least £25,000, although the true figure is hidden and could be much higher. The BBC’s register of external events, released quarterly, shows the levels to which some presenters will go to earn extra money. On a Friday in February, Walker, 45, hosted a daytime event for Best Companies, interviewing employers about their “workplace engagement” levels. Within hours, he was hosting a second event, details of which were not included on the register. But each assignment paid £5,000-10,000. His BBC salary is £295,000-£299,999 . BBC sources said Walker was not hosting BBC Breakfast that day and was free to take on other work. A week later, he earned a further … [Read more...] about Dan Walker among BBC presenters with nice little earners on the side
