Counting calories is hardly anyone’s favourite pastime. Can you take CBD when you're on antidepressants? What you need to know Though if you really need to lose weight, it’s been considered a necessity for years and the only way of effectively shedding pounds. But according to new research, strict counting might be no more effective than – increasingly popular – fasting diets, in which you eat 500 calories every other day while eating normally on others. The most famous version of these being the 5:2 diet , in which two days are fast days and the remaining five in the week ones in which you can eat normally. A randomised clinical trial at the University of Illinois in Chicago has found that people who take part in fasting diets lose about the same amount of weight as those who do strict calorie counting. Involving 100 obese adults, the study observed the effects of alternate-day fasting on weight maintenance and cardiovascular disease risk. One group took … [Read more...] about Fasting every other day could be as effective as calorie counting, a study has found

Nazi guard, 101, jailed for role in more than 3,500 concentration camp deaths
A former Nazi guard, now aged 101, who was involved in sending more than 3,500 people to their deaths at a German concentration camp has been sentenced to five years in jail. Prosecutors had said that Josef S., a member of the Nazi party's paramilitary SS, played a role in the deaths of 3,518 people at the Sachsenhausen camp, north of Berlin, by regularly standing guard in the watchtower between 1942 and 1945. The trial took nearly nine months as doctors had said the man, whose full name was not disclosed due to German trial reporting rules, was only partially fit to stand trial, and sessions were limited to two and a half hours a day. Some people interned in Sachsenhausen were murdered with Zyklon-B, the poison gas also used in other extermination camps where millions of Jews were killed during the Holocaust. Sachsenhausen housed mainly political prisoners from across Europe, along with Soviet prisoners of war and some Jews. The defendant was regularly standing guard … [Read more...] about Nazi guard, 101, jailed for role in more than 3,500 concentration camp deaths
How a military veteran battling PTSD built a castle on a mountain, and rebuilt his life, one stone at a time
Sirhowy Valley, Wales — Mikey Allen didn't plan to build a castle. He just needed somewhere to be alone, to find some peace. But he also needed something to occupy his time and drown out his thoughts. Hauling stones and logs up a remote mountainside in Wales was physically punishing. It left him with little time for reflection, and it gave him purpose. "The goal has created some form of hope, has kept me alive to a certain degree," Allen told CBS News. A combination of skill and luck kept him alive when he served as a lance corporal with the British Army in Afghanistan more than a decade ago. He was the point-man for his unit, which was tasked with uncovering roadside bombs. Death and injury were common during his seven-month tour. On one patrol in Helmand Province, he saw an Afghan National Police officer step on a mine laid by Taliban militants. "There was a big explosion. Me and my colleague went sideways skidding across the floor. The best way I can describe it is it … [Read more...] about How a military veteran battling PTSD built a castle on a mountain, and rebuilt his life, one stone at a time
Children saved from Nazis by British hero approached by filmmakers for ‘incredible story’
Children saved from the Nazis by a British humanitarian have been invited to recreate an emotional piece of TV history for a film. Sir Anthony Hopkins will play Sir Nicholas Winton in One Life, the story of how Sir Nicholas rescued 669 children from Czechoslovakia and brought them to Britain in 1938-39. The tear-jerking scenes when he came face to face with some of the refugees in a 1988 episode of That’s Life have gone down in television folklore. Film-makers have approached surviving children or their direct descendants to appear in the movie when the sequence from the Esther Rantzen BBC TV show is re-enacted. A source said: “They want to make the scene as authentic and emotional as possible. Inmate freed after conviction vacated in fatal 1997 shooting
A man convicted and imprisoned for more than 20 years for the 1997 shooting death of another man in New Orleans was freed Monday after prosecutors agreed that his conviction should be vacated. Court records show a motion to vacate the conviction of Cedric L. Dent, 47, in the shooting death of Anthony Milton was granted by a judge Monday and the district attorney's office agreed not to continue prosecuting the case. The shooting happened outside a New Orleans supermarket, court records show. The Innocence Project New Orleans organization said its investigation determined that prosecutors in the 1990s withheld documents that showed a witness to the shooting gave a description that didn't match Dent, and that a key witness's story changed multiple times before he testified at the trial. The documents that were withheld also revealed other witnesses who gave descriptions of the gunman that didn't match Dent, reports CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV . "Cedric Dent is a victim … [Read more...] about Inmate freed after conviction vacated in fatal 1997 shooting
