E mma Raducanu suffered blister problems which left the skin “ripping off” her injured hand, causing fresh concern just weeks before her US Open defence . In furnace-like conditions in Washington and on an eerily quiet court, Raducanu was subjected to the ultimate endurance test in a dogged, second-round win over Camila Osorio at the Citi Open. The 7-6, 7-6 win set up a quarter-final against Liudmila Samsonova today and the question is how Raducanu will be able to recover from her callouses, described as “pretty ugly” by on court interviewer Rennae Stubbs after the match. Witnessed by only a sparse crowd in the US capital, temperatures peaked at 35 degrees with many spectators sheltering under umbrellas and towels because of the fierce heat. The record-beating heat in Bude topped the previous high for Cornwall of 33.9C (93F) in June 1976. The highest temperature in Devon was 35C (95F) in Chivenor, just shy of the previous record of 35.4C (95.7F) at Saunton Sands in August 1990. Prince Charles said on a visit to Cornwall that there was a "genuine emergency" for Cornwall, the UK and the rest of the world. Tuesday is also expected to be very hot, with an amber warning issued by the Met Office across Devon and Cornwall. In Plymouth, the temperature hit 34C (93F) as city dwellers sought respite in the seafront lido where the water was a relatively cool 22C (72F). The warm home discount is a one-off payment of £140 that goes towards your heating costs. The money is not paid to you but is a one-off discount on your electricity bill between October and March. The government announced last month the discount would be extended until March 2026, with energy bill rebates to be increased to £150. However, a date has yet to be announced for when this increase will come into effect.
