A teenage rugby player who swallowed a slug as a dare and became a paraplegic is fighting the government after having disability allowance cut. Sam Ballard swallowed the slimy garden bug at a friend's party in 2010. He was sat drinking red wine with his pals when one of them brought out the slug and said: "Eat it, I dare you," news.com.au reports. Not one to turn down a challenge, Sam swallowed the creature but the 19-year-old from Sydney quickly fell ill. He was taken to hospital where doctors told him he had been infected with rat lungworm. While the disease is usually found in rodents, snails and slugs can become infected as they often eat the rats' faeces. The excrement contains a parasite which is known as Angiostrongylus cantonensis. It is very rare, but sometimes the parasite can cause an infection on the brain. And devastatingly this is what happened to Sam. He developed eosinophilic meningo-encephalitis and fell into a coma for 420 days. When he woke up he became a … [Read more...] about Teenager left a paraplegic after swallowing a slug for a bet at a party

When the men in black walked into her restaurant one Friday morning and sat at the round table in the corner, Brittany Porter knew exactly what they were. Pale, skittish, aggressively tattooed, they wore black T-shirts with a cryptic white logo over their hearts. One had a razor inked along his left jaw and two SS lightning bolts dripping next to his eye like a double set of tears. One wore a handgun on his hip. Porter went to the table, smiled and asked what they wanted. It was just after 8am. Two of the neo-Nazis ordered chicken nuggets. On Facebook the night before, Porter read about the group of racists who were coming to eastern Kentucky to hold a rally. They had chosen an economically struggling stretch of coal country with a population that was 98% white and that had voted 80% for Trump. In their propaganda videos, the neo-Nazi leaders had talked about the scourge of drug addiction in Pike County. At 30, Porter knew Pike County’s problems. She herself was a recovered … [Read more...] about Is there a neo-Nazi storm brewing in Trump country?
As they did in 2015 and 2017, voters in the UK are heading to the polls on Thursday for a crucial general election. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservatives campaigned with a promise to "get Brexit done," while his rival Jeremy Corbyn and the opposition Labour Party have campaigned for a second referendum on whether to leave the European Union. What you need to know: Voting kicks off at 0700 GMT at polling stations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Exit polls are expected shortly after voting ends at 2200 GMT. The latest opinion polls put Johnson's Conservatives in the lead with a small, 28-seat majority after Labour gained ground in recent weeks. Winter weather could impact voter turnout, with forecasters predicting icy temperatures, rain and snow. Smaller parties could wind up playing a major role if the Conservatives and Labour fall short of a majority and need to form an alliance. Nearly 650,000 people have interacted with the Labour leader's posts in this campaign. And 173,000 are newcomers to Labour ’s social media presence – which the party claims shows Labour has been able to reach out beyond its core base. “Labour have changed up their approach this election, they are far more combative and have energised a difference segment of the electorate to say 2015 or even 2017,” said Tristan Hotham, a social media researcher at the University of Bath, who has studied the parties’ social media campaigning. Labour sources claim it has been a successful digital campaign for the party this year: Labour's eight-strong digital team has five times the number of video views on Twitter , and 67% more shares of content on Facebook , than it did in the 2017 election. The most popular video the Labour Party has produced was Rob Delaney’s impassioned plea for the National Health Service (NHS), which has been seen by 13.3 million … [Read more...] about Jeremy Corbyn has reached nearly 650k people online – and reached beyond his base
A dog which got stuck in a rabbit hole for TWO weeks, survived by eating slugs and drinking rain water. Yorkshire terrier Indy chased a rabbit into its burrow while out being walked by owner Giorgio Lamola, 50. The three year-old pooch became wedged in the tunnel and could not wriggle free. She was missing for two weeks before being sniffed out by another dog whose owner reunited Indy with Mr Lamola, of Formby, Merseyside, the Liverpool Echo reports. The businessman, who runs the Gusto Trattoria Italian restaurant in Southport, said: “It’s a miracle Indy is still alive.” Mr Lamola was walking the miniature mutt on National Trust land when she ran after a rabbit and vanished. A frantic search followed and worried residents even formed search parties. Mr Lamola said: “We were out picking blackberries and Indy was off the lead because she is well trained and usually comes straight away when you call her. “We went down a narrow path, she saw something – … [Read more...] about Dog gets stuck in rabbit hole for TWO WEEKS and survives by eating slugs and drinking rain water
