Amazon buys Twitch for $970 million

August 26, 2014 by metro.co.uk

Google has failed in its attempt to acquire Twitch and instead Amazon has stepped up to buy out the video-streaming service. Just a couple of months ago it seemed as if Google was a shoe-in to buy video streaming platform Twitch , presumably with a view to making it a part of YouTube. But the deal has fallen through and it’s instead Amazon which has acquired the company. Amazon paid a cool $970 million (£585 million) for Twitch, in cash, although it’s made no statement on what it plans to do with the service. Although the Amazon Fire TV set-top box was initially thought to be the company’s attempt at a mass market home console the gaming component of the device has so far been downplayed. However, Amazon did acquire Killer Instinct developer Double Helix and have announced support from traditional publishers – so it may be merely that they plan to focus on games later on. Or perhaps release some sort of dedicated gaming hardware. As for Twitch, since 2011 … [Read more...] about Amazon buys Twitch for $970 million

Florida “killer clown” trial delayed again as defense lawyers struggle to find witnesses 32 years after murder

May 18, 2022 by www.cbsnews.com

A Florida judge has reluctantly delayed the trial of a woman accused of dressing like a clown and fatally shooting her lover's wife more than 30 years ago after defense attorneys said they're having a hard time contacting witnesses. The trial for Sheila Keen-Warren was supposed to begin June 3. But on Tuesday Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Scott Suskauer agreed to what could be a four-month delay, the Palm Beach Post reported . Suskauer said he had already cleared his schedule, delaying other trials and hearings to be able to preside over a three-week trial. "Think about the impact it has on me. I have a duty to the public," Suskauer told the lawyers. "You also have a victim's family that has waited a long time for justice." This is the sixth time the trial has been delayed. It was May 1990 when Marlene Warren, 40, opened her door to find a clown in an orange wig, a red nose but normal high-top shoes holding carnations. According to a report in the Sun-Sentinel the … [Read more...] about Florida “killer clown” trial delayed again as defense lawyers struggle to find witnesses 32 years after murder

Russia’s spending $15.5 million an hour on Ukraine war

May 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Russia has been spending about a billion rubles—or around $15.5 million—per hour on the Ukraine war since Russian President Vladimir Putin 's military campaign began nearly three months ago, according to Russian Ministry of Finance data released Tuesday. Russia's federal budget in April showed 628 billion rubles were spent on national defense, which breaks down to about 21 billion rubles a day, The Moscow Times reported. The online news site noted that the daily amount is comparable to the annual budget of some entire regions in Russia. The report detailing the high cost of the war comes as Russian military forces continue to struggle against the defending Ukrainians. In recent weeks, Putin's troops have been losing ground that Russia had initially seized during the early stages of the conflict. On Sunday, the British Ministry of Defense released a report saying that "Russia's Donbas offensive has lost momentum and fallen significantly behind schedule ." (The Donbas is an … [Read more...] about Russia’s spending $15.5 million an hour on Ukraine war

Published 5 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Children's services in a part of Devon have undergone a "remarkable transformation" and have been rated as good by inspectors. The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) visited Torbay in March . It said Torbay's Children's Services performed poorly in 2011 and rated them inadequate in 2016 and 2018 . Council leader Steve Darling said the improvement was "absolutely incredible". In 2010, when Ofsted said some children were being left at risk of "significant harm", the then director of children's services, Carol Tozer, said she was "deeply sorry" for letting children down. She resigned the following year , citing health reasons. Following the inadequate rating in 2018, Plymouth City Council was put in charge of Torbay's Children's Services.
