Serial rapist Joseph McCann forced a mum to watch as he sexually assaulted her 17-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son. It was just one of the knifepoint attacks committed by McCann, 34, during his terrifying two-week spree that made him Britain's most wanted man. McCann is facing life in prison when he is sentenced on Monday after being found guilty of 37 charges relating to 11 victims, including eight rapes, false imprisonment and kidnap. The convicted burglar had been freed after a probation error when he went on a cocaine and vodka-fuelled rampage, abducting, raping and assaulting victims aged between 11 and 71 in Watford, London and the North West. In one case, he tricked his way into the home of a mother he'd met in a bar in the early hours of May 5, the Manchester Evening News reports. McCann tied her up with hair straighteners and forced her to watch as he sexually assaulted her daughter and son, who was the youngest victim of the attacks. The rapist threatened the mum, … [Read more...] about Serial rapist Joseph McCann forced mum to watch sex attack on her 11-year-old son

From glamour to gunfire: the tourist city of Acapulco torn apart by violence
When mayor Evodio Velázquez’s sparkling white Jeep Cherokee SUV pulls up at the side of the road, patrols of soldiers and heavily armed federal police are waiting for him. Velázquez’s “tourist police”, a special unit of young female officers who wear light blue uniforms, stand in a small cluster by the kerb. Nominally law enforcement agents, these young women are really part of Velázquez’s broader marketing effort for the city of Acapulco – to add some friendly faces as the first point of contact between visitors revelling on this famous Mexican resort’s golden beaches, and the security forces struggling to keep the city safe. Mid-morning, the sun is rising over the glittering bay but the beaches are mostly empty. Machine-gun carrying police officers – veterans of a decade-long conflict with sophisticated organised crime groups and myriad splinter groups of local street gangs – stand on the perimeter, just out of view … [Read more...] about From glamour to gunfire: the tourist city of Acapulco torn apart by violence
Art Basel: Small galleries are dying despite art market boom
From Jeff Koons to Gerhard Richter — works by international art stars, as well as by young talents, are featured alongside classics of the modern era at the Basel Art Fair. Over 4,000 artists are represented at the stands of the 290 galleries from 34 countries — with among them of course the world's leading art dealers such as Gagosian, White Cube, David Zwirner or Thaddaeus Ropac. Yet Marc Spiegler, Art Basel global director, is not celebrating times of expansion in the art market, but rather lamenting the fact that less-renowned galleries are facing difficulties. The art fair hopes to attract them as participants with discounted registration fees. Kristian Jarmuschek Galleries going out of business in Germany too The number of small and middle-sized galleries has been shrinking in many … [Read more...] about Art Basel: Small galleries are dying despite art market boom
The fight against racism in Russian football
CSKA Moscow fan Robert Ustian (pictured above) was understandably upset when his club lost 5-1 away in the Champions League to Italian giants Roma in September 2014. But what came as an even greater shock him at the time was that that fellow CSKA fans attacked police officers, threw fireworks, chanted racist songs and displayed Nazi symbols during the match. Looking back, Ustian says, he and his friends felt that these violent, xenophobic fans were giving a bad name to all CSKA supporters. "We were like their hostages, and we had enough of that." Read more: Former Germany star Gerald Asamoah calls on fans to stand up to racism So the 34-year-old Ustian began taking to social media and writing blog posts against xenophobia in Russian football. He also got his friends together and founded a grass-roots anti-racism initiative. Four years have passed since then — and the group remains the only one of its kind in Russian football today. Football fans can be tolerant, too In the run up … [Read more...] about The fight against racism in Russian football
