Weather stations underpin effective climate action—We need more of them | Opinion

April 22, 2021 by www.newsweek.com

Weather forecasts save lives. Every year, millions of people are evacuated to safety thanks to early-warning systems that can predict the path of a hurricane, the intensity of floods and the risk of wildfires. But weather systems are becoming more erratic. Climate change has increased both the severity and the frequency of extreme weather. We need more accurate and timely data to understand how our weather systems are changing—data that is needed to continue saving lives. Yet the global map of weather stations looks much like our planet at night: The brightly lit conurbations of Europe and North America show in sharp contrast to the darkness engulfing Africa and much of Latin America, polar regions and the vast expanse of our oceans. What is more, those dark, data-less regions have got darker as investment in the upkeep of weather stations has dried up , particularly during the pandemic. The shortfall in weather data undermines the science that underpins early warning systems and … [Read more...] about Weather stations underpin effective climate action—We need more of them | Opinion

What Russia got right about the coronavirus—and what it can share with the world | Opinion

July 14, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

Since the start of the coronavirus crisis, Russia had received criticism in international media over its response to the pandemic. In reality, the country is setting an example others can learn from in many vital areas. Russia is one of the global leaders in testing for the virus, in producing efficient drugs and it is rapidly approaching mass production of its own vaccine. The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), the country's sovereign wealth fund, has played a key role in fighting the virus in Russia. We learned about the threat in late January from our network of international partners, advised the government in its assessment of it and moved ahead with investment. With countries like the United States predicted to reach a staggering 100,000 cases a day, it is important that we quickly develop focused solutions based on proven technologies with no time to spare. We believe that RDIF has now developed key elements of such a practical solution. Working jointly with some of … [Read more...] about What Russia got right about the coronavirus—and what it can share with the world | Opinion

The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president

August 16, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

ANALYSIS: For the first time since leaving office, former US president Donald Trump has started getting specific about what he would do if he wins a second term in the White House. The pitches he's made onstage over the past month in speeches from Washington, DC, to Dallas to Las Vegas are a stark contrast from ordinary stump speeches. He promises a break from American history if elected, with a federal government stacked with loyalists and unleashed to harm his perceived enemies. There has never been a potential candidate like Trump : a defeated former president whose followers attacked the Capitol, who still insists he never lost, and who openly pledges revenge on those he views as having wronged him. As his 2016 campaign and administration showed time and again, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, he and his aides worked furiously to translate rally slogans into official policy - whether or not there were legal or political barriers to overcome. And if Trump does … [Read more...] about The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president

What happens if I can’t pay my energy bills amid cost of living crisis?

August 17, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Households across the UK apparently owe a staggering total of £1.3 billion to energy companies. That’s a whopping sum, but when it comes to individual households, the cost of gas and electricity – dictated by Ofgem’s soaring energy price cap – can also feel overwhelming. In protest, some are signing up for Don’t Pay UK , essentially ‘striking’ against the cost of living by refusing to pay for their winter energy supply. But if you’re in a position where you can’t afford to cover your energy bills at all, what are your options? And what help is available to you? Here is everything you need to know. What happens if you can’t pay your energy bills? If you’ve realised your bills are so out of hand that you can’t pay them, your first move should be to contact your energy company . Energy expert Myles Robinson explains: ‘Notify [your supplier] that you want to pay off your debt through a payment plan. ‘They should discuss with you ways to pay what you owe … [Read more...] about What happens if I can’t pay my energy bills amid cost of living crisis?

Earth Day 2021 Google Doodle animation shows how ‘one small act’ can save planet

April 22, 2021 by www.newsweek.com

Earth Day is celebrated in a Google Doodle that "highlights how everyone can plant the seed to a brighter future—one sapling at a time!" The Earth Day Google Doodle video begins with an image of a woman lying underneath a tree and a little girl holding a sapling. Then, the video sees the child plant the sapling and watch it grow into a tree as she grows old. The old woman then gives a sapling to a little boy, and the cycle repeats again and again until there is a forest. Sophie Diao, the artist behind the video, said she was inspired by "the stories of people who had planted trees when they were very young and cared for them throughout their lives, and people—sometimes as a community, other times working individually—who made it a goal to reforest a place, whether it be one the densest cities in the world or an arid desert that used to be lush and green. "Once I had the seed of the idea of animating a little girl growing old with a tree, the rest of the Doodle story fell … [Read more...] about Earth Day 2021 Google Doodle animation shows how ‘one small act’ can save planet

More info Liz Truss has hit out at Rishi Sunak’s plans to tackle the cost-of-living crisis during ITV’s leadership debate. The Foreign Secretary added: "We need to do better we need to take on Whitehall." She said: “Rishi, you have raised taxes to the highest level in 70 years. That is not going to drive economic growth. You raised national insurance even though people like me opposed it in Cabinet at the time, because we could have afforded to fund the NHS through general taxation. “The fact is that raising taxes at this moment will choke off economic growth, it will prevent us getting the revenue we need to pay off the debt.” Trending … [Read more...] about Tory leadership LIVE: Rishi fuming as Truss goes straight for him ‘Taxes will choke us!’
