Wednesday night is new party night in city centres as rise in WFH shrinks the working week, figures show

May 19, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

Mid-week hangovers are on the rise in the UK, as a new social trend of heading to the pub on a Wednesday or Thursday instead of a Friday grows in popularity. Working from home means city workers are less likely to head into their office on a Friday, with most preferring to commute during the middle of the week. A consequence of this means that Wednesday evenings are becoming the new party night. Bar and restaurant owners say, because the overwhelming majority of office staff stay at home on Friday, that Wednesday is the new Thursday, and Thursday is the new Friday. Wednesday and Thursdays nights are becoming the most popular week day to party in cities according to some hospitality bosses, as more workers commute into the office mid-week than on Fridays and head to the pub after Freespace, a technology company that has 120,000 workplace sensors in offices across the country, has released new data that shows that under 15 per cent of desks were occupied last Friday. … [Read more...] about Wednesday night is new party night in city centres as rise in WFH shrinks the working week, figures show

‘Public duped’ as long-term visas for foreign nationals up 40pc since Brexit

May 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The number of foreign nationals granted visas to enter the UK long term has increased by 40 per cent since Brexit despite ministers’ pledges to take control of immigration, according to a new study. The research, by the Migration Watch think tank, found that long-term visas granted to non-UK nationals last year totalled 830,000 – up from around 600,000 before Brexit . Lower salary and skill thresholds for foreign workers, the widening classification of “shortage” jobs and the end of restrictions on students staying on to work after graduating have contributed to the surge. While the number of EU nationals who now need visas has dwindled to around 50,000 from a peak of around 280,000 in 2015-16, the number of non-EU nationals coming to the UK to work, study, resettle or live with their families has risen sharply. Some 210,000 – a quarter of the 830,000 granted – were work visas, up from the average of 160,000 per year for the period 2010 to 2020. From Elon Musk to Billie Eilish, the geniuses who live with superpowers from autism to ADHD

September 24, 2021 by www.thesun.co.uk

WHEN billionaire Elon Musk revealed he has autism on prime-time American TV, it was as if he was ripping off his shirt to reveal his personal superpower. Musk, the eccentric CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX , said: “I’m actually making history tonight as the first person with Asperger’s to host SNL (Saturday Night Live).” Far from being a condition to be pitied or considered a burden, Asperger’s, a form of autism, can bestow exactly the super-skills — original thinking, attention to detail and plain speaking — needed to thrive in business or science. And as the second-richest person in the world, boy, has Musk thrived. This superpower can be the same for other conditions that are thought of as disabilities: ADHD, Tourette’s syndrome, dyspraxia and dyslexia. Differences in the brain might make everyday life more challenging but they can also enable a person to excel. Billie Eilish , voted Best International Female at this week’s Brit Awards, has Tourette’s syndrome, … [Read more...] about From Elon Musk to Billie Eilish, the geniuses who live with superpowers from autism to ADHD

NHS will NOT hit its target to return treatment waits for cancer to pre-Covid levels by next March, health chief warns

May 18, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

Dr Liz Bishop (pictured), who sits on NHS England's national cancer board, admitted that she 'does not think' it will be 'business as usual' by March The NHS will likely still be missing crucial cancer targets next year, a senior health official warned today. Dr Liz Bishop, who sits on NHS England's national cancer board, admitted that she 'does not think' it will be 'business as usual' by March. This is despite the Government promising performance to return to pre-pandemic levels by spring 2023. It comes in wake of the 1.25 per cent national insurance hike, which is set to raise billions to help the NHS recover from the pandemic and reform social care over the next three years. Experts called Dr Bishop's comments a 'frightening admission of defeat', with the c ancer crisis set to cost 'thousands of lives'. Conservative thinktanks claimed the NHS has to 'get to grips' with the backlog and provide 'world-leading care' to Britons, who are funneling more cash into the … [Read more...] about NHS will NOT hit its target to return treatment waits for cancer to pre-Covid levels by next March, health chief warns

Dad on dialysis ‘shocked’ by Boris Johnson’s hostile reaction to his plight

May 18, 2022 by metro.co.uk

A dad footing soaring household bills including his dialysis costs has said he is ‘shocked’ at Boris Johnson ’s ‘hostile’ response after his plight was raised at Prime Minister’s Questions. Phoenix Halliwell has been forced to effectively switch off his heating as he tries to maintain his life-saving haemodialysis for five nights a week. The former electrician, 46, needs to use his machine for nine hours of treatment at a time – with the alternative being having to go into hospital. His case was raised by Sir Keir Starmer at the House of Commons today, with the prime minister asking for details about the ‘sad’ situation. However, Mr Halliwell, from Coventry, has little faith in the government to help him or thousands of others in a similar predicament amid the escalating cost of living crisis. He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I found Boris Johnson’s response to be hostile, it almost felt like he was having a personal attack on me, although it’s probably just my … [Read more...] about Dad on dialysis ‘shocked’ by Boris Johnson’s hostile reaction to his plight

Britain is drifting towards economic oblivion

May 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The last time UK inflation was at these levels, British troops fought a war 8,000 miles away in the Falklands, Prince William was born, and Steven Spielberg’s film E.T. became the highest grossing movie of all-time. Inflation is now at a 40-year high after the consumer price index rose to 9pc in April, according to the latest ONS figures. That’s the sharpest jump since 1982, which, as Torsten Bell of the Resolution Foundation pointed out, means much of the country has never experienced an inflationary shock of this ferocity “in their working lives”. Unfortunately that also applies to much of the current Cabinet, some of whom were barely in short trousers the last time price spikes this severe tore through the economy - except the Chancellor, who would have been in nappies. Many ministers simply won’t even remember the huge economic turmoil of that period, including the deep recession of 1981 as Margaret Thatcher’s government desperately tried to tame an inflationary spiral … [Read more...] about Britain is drifting towards economic oblivion

We will fight, says Volodymyr Zelensky as Russian begins offensive in eastern Ukraine

April 18, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

V olodymyr Zelensky said on Monday night Russia's large-scale offensive in the eastern Donbas region has begun. Fighting has intensified in eastern Ukraine after Russia withdrew troops from the region around the capital Kyiv and refocused its efforts on the Donbas region that pro-Moscow separatists have partly controlled since 2014. Ukraine's president said: "We can now confirm that Russian troops have begun the battle for the Donbas, which they have been preparing for a long time. A large part of the Russian army is now dedicated to this offensive. "No matter how many Russian soldiers are brought here, we will fight. We will defend ourselves." Shortly before Mr Zelensky's address, the regional governor of eastern Lugansk Serhiy Haidai also announced the beginning of Russia's much-anticipated attack. "It's hell. The offensive has begun, the one we've been talking about for weeks. There's constant fighting in Rubizhne and Popasna, fighting in other peaceful cities," he … [Read more...] about We will fight, says Volodymyr Zelensky as Russian begins offensive in eastern Ukraine

Multi-task with a side hustle to make more cash in the cost-of-living squeeze

May 19, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

INFLATION has soared to a 40-year high, pushing hard-working families to the limit. To make ends meet, almost half of us have a “side hustle”, such as selling unwanted items on eBay. But entrepreneurial workers are taking self-employment to the next level with the “multi-hustle”. The trend, which involves people juggling multiple small businesses and freelance jobs, is being led by younger generations more comfortable at not having a salaried role. A new report from forecasters Oxford Economics, in conjunction with accounting software firm QuickBooks, reveals that 16 per cent of Gen Z sole traders are already multi-hustlers. This compares to just one in 20 of Gen X and three per cent of the post-war Baby Boomers generation.
