The news is full of reports of human rights violations: in Crimea and the Donbas since the 2014 Russian invasions, as well as in dozens of countries around the world with a variety of political systems. But compared to the vogue for human rights in the 1970s, enthusiasm seems to have waned. Even then, it was not a novelty. Human rights can be traced to Roman law and Stoic philosophy, with their continuation in medieval law. Central was the concept of natural law as superior to the law of the state, and thus capable of protecting the individual from government authority (H. Lauterpacht, “International Law and Human Rights,” 1968, pp. 84-85). English common law, and the writings of John Locke and other Enlightenment philosophers, further developed human rights theory. Among the “self-evident” truths listed in our Declaration of Independence was “that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among … [Read more...] about What ever happened to human rights?

An organization started by former Representative Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt, held a rally in Houston with student activists, to encourage people to vote. But gun rights are strong in Texas, and guns are part of the culture. “These are scary times,” said Giffords from a stage at the University of Houston on Friday evening, with some difficulty, as she was shot in the head in 2011, and still has trouble talking. She was able to give a short speech, encouraging people to vote. She and her husband Mark Kelley, a retired astronaut, have been on the campaign trail going to places with contested elections like Texas. Their organisation gave this state an F, the lowest grade, on gun safety. He said they have been traveling around the United States to encourage people to elect candidates who will “do something on this issue of gun violence, an issue that makes our country stand out in absolutely the worst of ways.” 'Legislation works, laws … [Read more...] about Gun control advocates face uphill battle in Texas
President Trump was very clear about what needs to happen after the horrific mass shooting of Jewish people in a Pittsburgh synagogue. The logical answer, he opined, was to arm people in synagogues. ‘If they had some kind of protection inside the temple, maybe it could have been a very much different situation,’ he told reporters. ‘They didn’t and he was able to do things that unfortunately he shouldn’t have been able to do.’ When asked if the shooting indicated a need to revisit gun laws, Trump replied that ‘this had little to do with it.’ He then added: ‘As you know, numerous police were badly injured.’ Yes, they were Mr President. Four officers were shot, in fact. And they were armed, highly trained, and knew what they were dealing with by the time they arrived at the synagogue. So what possible chance would a solitary guard have to stop a lunatic who burst in during a service blazing away with a semi-automatic rifle? We … [Read more...] about PIERS MORGAN-Stop being a tool of the NRA, Mr Trump, and ban the AR-15
Gov. Bruce Rauner has lost a lot in his first term. “I’ve lost 22 pounds and most of my hair in this job,” Rauner said Friday on a campaign stop in Crystal Lake as he prepares to battle Democrat billionaire J.B. Pritzker for a second term in office. The incumbent Republican multimillionaire met with the Northwest Herald Editorial Board to talk up a campaign that centers on reforming broken state systems and alleviating property taxes that are forcing Illinois residents to flee for affordable living. Rauner said the differences between himself and Pritzker could not be more stark. “Mr. Pritzker is running on a platform of tax hikes and bigger spending,” Rauner said, contending that Pritzker has proposed $11 billion in new programs and a constitutional amendment to change the flat income tax structure to a graduated income tax. “That will lead to a green light on taxing everybody. The middle class will get crushed with higher taxes, and … [Read more...] about Rauner attacks Pritzker, vows to focus on higher education in 2nd term
