Sport by Press Association August 6, 2018, 10:02 pm FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Sport newsletter Great Britain’s Reece Prescod is ready to cause an upset at the European Championships – so he can buy his mum a car. The 22-year-old is eyeing 100m victory, with the semi-final and final taking place on Tuesday at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Prescod was the only Briton to reach last year’s final at the World Championships – finishing seventh – and is hunting his first major title. He is third favourite behind team-mate Zharnel Hughes and France’s Jimmy Vicaut and is unlikely to splash out with any potential winnings he may get from sponsors Nike, choosing instead to treat his mum Jennifer. He said: “My athletics career is short, so as much as I want to enjoy myself at the time, I can’t just go and spend money left, right and centre. “I come from a single-parent family and my mum’s … [Read more...] about Reece Prescod targeting sprint glory – and buying a new car for mum

New car sales down 6% in the first half of 2018 as diesel plummets
Demand for new cars fell by 3.5 per cent in June leaving vehicle registrations for the first half of the year 6.3 per cent behind the figure from 2017. Almost 235,000 new cars were registered last month compared with just over 243,000 in the same month in 2017, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures reveal today. The motor industry body has now called on the Government to support investment in next generation diesels if it wants to reduce the emissions impact of vehicles in the country. Back diesel: The SMMT has called on the Government to back next-generation diesel-vehicle technology to make significant reductions to pollution levels in the UK The June decline in diesel registrations marked a 15 months of falling sales for the fuel type. New car market registrations slip as diesel slump continues
Diesel sales have continued to decline as uncertainty in the market hit new car sales in June, according to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). It has urged the government to back 'new-tech' diesel after the diesel market declined by 28.2 per cent last month, marking a 30 per cent slump for the year so far. Only 234,945 new car registrations were made in June, despite a 12.3 per cent increase in petrol car sales, which was insufficient to offset the continuing decline in diesel registrations. The SMMT said June capped off “a turbulent first half” to 2018, which was clouded somewhat by the previous year’s vehicle excise duty hikes, with the market reporting a steep double-digit decline in … [Read more...] about New car market registrations slip as diesel slump continues
