Nate Davis USA TODAY Published 6:23 AM EST Jan 16, 2019 The complexion of the 2019 NFL draft may have already changed significantly. Heisman Trophy-winning Oklahoma star Kyler Murray threw his name into the hat — for now anyway — ahead of Monday's deadline for underclassmen to declare their intentions. And though options remain open for Murray — he moonlights (sunlights?) as an outfielder and has already been selected in the first round of Major League Baseball's draft by the Oakland Athletics — his potential availability to NFL teams could add quite a bit of spice to a player pool that appears heavily skewed toward defense. So what if Murray is on the board when the draft kicks off April 25 in Nashville, Tennessee? Here's a very early scenario of how the first round might unfold. 1. Cardinals — Quinnen Williams, DT, Alabama: The Cards go to all the trouble of "earning" the top pick with a 3-13 record, yet they don't need a … [Read more...] about NFL mock draft 2019: Kyler Murray headed toward first-round pick?

Jim Henry Tallahassee Democrat Published 9:29 AM EST Dec 20, 2018 Florida State coach Willie Taggart confirmed starting quarterback Deondre Francois is “weighing his options” after graduating last weekend. “Deondre, he just graduated, I applaud him for that, for accomplishing one of his dreams and I know he’s weighing his options whether to leave or not,” Taggart said. “We’re going to be supportive of Deondre with whatever he decides to do." Francois, a redshirt junior this past season, has one year of eligibility remaining. He could either transfer to another FBS school and play immediately or enter the NFL draft. In a telephone interview Wednesday evening with the Orlando Sentinel, Francois said he could declare for the NFL draft if he receives a positive evaluation from the league. If not, he said he plans to return to Florida State and not seek a transfer to another school. “I’m still trying to decide … [Read more...] about Deondre Francois weighs Florida State future, transfer or NFL draft
Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has quietly become one of the brightest prospects in the NFL. Trubisky entered the league with sky-high expectations when the Bears traded up to select him with the second overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. He was forced to be patient, losing out in the battle for the starting job in the run-up to his rookie season before being thrown into a struggling side in week 5. His rookie season was a rollercoaster ride of peaks and troughs as he found his feet at the highest level and went through the expected growing pains of a first-year quarterback whilst showing flashes of his potential. After a steady start to the 2018 campaign, the man tasked with being the face of the storied Bears franchise enjoyed his breakout afternoon against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 30. Six touchdown passes, 354 passing yards and 48 points quickly saw Trubisky catapult into the limelight as a star of the future. He … [Read more...] about Mitch Trubisky stats, salary, net worth and girlfriend
Jim Reineking USA TODAY Published 12:55 AM EST Nov 16, 2018 Ed Oliver, Houston's All-American defensive tackle and a top NFL draft prospect, got into a heated argument with Cougars coach Major Applewhite before halftime of Thursday night's game against Tulane. The incident stemmed from Oliver being told to remove a long, heavy team coat — typically reserved for active players — on the sideline because he was not dressed to play in the game, according to ESPN sideline reporter Laura Rutledge. ESPN cameras caught Oliver having a heated conversation with Applewhite both on the sideline and en route to the locker room for halftime. Oliver did not return to the field for the second half of Houston's 48-17 win. "He got emotional, but he's young and that's what happens," Applewhite said after the game. "And he's not playing. That's hard. That's difficult. I don't hold anything against anyone. I'm just going to visit with him about it. I love him. I want him … [Read more...] about Ed Oliver: Top NFL prospect confronts Houston coach over team jacket
Mike Jones USA TODAY Published 12:41 p.m. UTC Sep 6, 2018 The anxiety-riddled question looms, even with future Hall of Famers still casting long shadows over the NFL and its premier position. It’s not enough to simply enjoy the present greatness of living legends: Brady, Brees, Roethlisberger, Rodgers, or other mainstay quarterbacks like Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Matt Ryan. Football fans aren’t wired that way. They always have to ask, “Who’s got next?” The thirst for the next crop of elite quarterback talent never wanes. That’s because the last decade of drafts has produced meager yields. Cam Newtons and Russell Wilsons are scarce. Disappointments thanks to faulty evaluations, ill fits and career-altering/threatening injuries abound. As the 2018 season opens Thursday with Atlanta at defending Super Bowl champ Philadelphia, a ripple of optimism has surfaced. It started last season as 2016 draft headliners Carson Wentz and Jared Goff posted … [Read more...] about A new wave of young quarterbacks could reshape the NFL’s landscape
