Toto Wolff insists ‘everything is easier’ for Max Verstappen than F1 title fight with Lewis Hamilton
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes ‘everything is easier’ for Max Verstappen in Formula 1 in 2022. The Dutchman secured his maiden world championship last December after coming out on top against Lewis Hamilton in the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with the pair having engaged in one of the most intense title fights in the sport’s seven-decade history. In 2022, though, Hamilton is unable to compete against Verstappen, with Mercedes toiling in the midfield as their W13 car is way off the pace of frontrunners Red Bull and Ferrari. Seven-time world champion Hamilton sits sixth in the standings after the opening five rounds of the campaign, 68 points behind early championship Charles Leclerc, who has won two races. Verstappen has won the other three, but is behind by 19 points due to Red Bull’s reliability problems, which have seen him retire from two likely second-place finishes in Bahrain and Australia. Formula 1 underwent its biggest regulation change in a … [Read more...] about Toto Wolff insists ‘everything is easier’ for Max Verstappen than F1 title fight with Lewis Hamilton
What future awaits ‘Islamic State’ after its leader’s death?
Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi never left the house. He was the only high-ranking leader of the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS) who never released video or voice messages. He feared being detected in his nondescript house in Atmeh in the province of Idlib in northwestern Syria, not far from the border with Turkey. The region is dominated by the rival Islamist militia Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of al-Qaida, so the neighbors would surely never have guessed who the man next door actually was. He seems to have been planning an IS comeback. But the US secret services found him first. Even though his late predecessor Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had also gone into hiding in the region, few had expected this of al-Qurayshi too — until a US military strike in early February, during which he reportedly blew himself up, killing several members of his family as well. What consequences could his death have. How significant is IS today? For years, IS has waged a … [Read more...] about What future awaits ‘Islamic State’ after its leader’s death?
MotorGP 22 review: An immersive racing simulator with fantastic customisation
Developer Milestone is back with another racing simulator, this time around it's the long-running MotoGP series which returns with the latest entry MotoGP 22. MotoGP 22 is simply stunning with each of the bikes looking like spitting images of their real-life counterparts. Character models in races have realistic reactions during crashes and other pivotal moments in sustaining real time wear and tear. Outside of races the character models can be less emotive and are slightly static. The tracks have also been given a boost with much better life-like weather conditions, from water sprays when raining to miniature dust clouds on the grittier tracks. The real-time lighting really shines when sunlight beams off the bikes and helmets. MotoGP 22 is a visual spectacle that really captures the physical essence of MotoGP, it's like watching a real race. Will the ‘Islamic State’ benefit from the Ukraine war?
In the middle of last month, the extremist group known as the "Islamic State" issued a threat. The group announced "a blessed campaign to take revenge" after their leader was killed in a US military raid in Syria in February. At the same time, the extremist group, which controlled around a third of Syria and Iraq at the height of its powers, also called on supporters to take advantage of opportunities presented by the war in Ukraine . While "infidel" Western nations were preoccupied, "Islamic State" supporters could attack, the message suggested. Meanwhile, a magazine openly supporting al-Qaeda — another similar extremist organization that the IS group distanced itself from in 2013 — proposed that its supporters somehow get hold of weapons being handed out to civilians in Ukraine, then use them against Europeans. As yet the idea of launching terrorist attacks while the West is distracted by Ukraine does not appear to have caught on in Europe . The IS group has around a … [Read more...] about Will the ‘Islamic State’ benefit from the Ukraine war?

How a Formula One crash led to the disappearance of a £140,000 diamond
Formula One has long been renowned as the millionaire's playground, with individual parts of the cars often worth more than your average house. Drivers like Lewis Hamilton are also paid a small fortune for their endeavours, while tickets to races themselves can set you back thousands of pounds, making it a very exclusive club. Naturally, this often leads to some rather remarkable stories - including one where a crash led to the disappearance of a £140,000 diamond. If you haven't heard it, let us indulge you. Unsurprisingly, Monte Carlo was the location for the jewellery escapade but while heist movies will focus on the casinos, it was the F1 grid that played host to a scene that would probably be rejected by most Hollywood executives for being too unrealistic. In 2004, Jaguar were part of a PR stunt for the Monaco Grand Prix to promote the release of the upcoming Ocean's 12 movie starring the likes of Brad Pitt and George Clooney, which was the second movie in the … [Read more...] about How a Formula One crash led to the disappearance of a £140,000 diamond

The Speechwriter: Inside the Bush Administration During the Iraq War
My youngest daughter was born in December 2001: a war baby. When my wife nursed little Beatrice in the middle of the night, she'd hear F-16s patrolling the Washington skies. During the weeks before, anthrax attacks had killed five people and infected 17 others. What would come next? In October, I attended a crowded briefing in the fourth-floor auditorium of the Executive Office Building, at which the Secret Service explained its plans to protect the White House against a biological attack. They weren't very reassuring. Basically, we'd all be dead. Even more disturbing were the small-session briefings by staffers for the new Homeland Security adviser. They warned of simultaneous car bombings at strategic intersections, targeted assassinations of officials as they retrieved their morning papers from their stoops, and poisonous gases released in Metro stations. Like many Washingtonians, my wife and I had prepared an emergency kit in the basement: canned goods, bottled water, … [Read more...] about The Speechwriter: Inside the Bush Administration During the Iraq War
