Individually, these babies have suffered everything from meningitis to heart defects - but one thing they all have in common is that their tiny lives were all saved in Hull's NICU. Whether their stay was short, or months long, their grateful parents all agree their time on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Hull Women and Children's Hospital was the difference between life and death. Their parents all say there are no words that could express their true gratitude for the "miracle" workers who save babies' lives every day - but during NICU Awareness Month they have tried to put their appreciation into words to celebrate Hull's "amazing" unit. AN 11-day-old baby almost died after contracting herpes from a “kiss of death”. Lucy Kendall, 23, knew there was something wrong with her newborn son Oliver Miller after he started refusing to feed. She quickly took him to hospital where after a “horrendous eight days” he was finally herpes simplex virus-1 virus. Lucy, and her partner Jaz Miller, 25, are sharing Oliver’s story in a bid to raise awareness of the dangers of kissing children if you have a cold sore. Lucy, of Hull, East Yorks., said: “We were told the symptoms were from a virus called the kiss of death - but it can be from touch as well. “It was just heart breaking for us all when we found out after eight days what was wrong with Oliver. A COUPLE have seven babies under three after they tried for “just one more” – and fell pregnant with QUINTUPLETS. Chad and Amy Kempel, 36 and 34, who live in a three-bedroom home in Mountain View, California, are now proud parents to Savannah, three, Avery, one, and Lincoln, Noelle, Grayson, Preston and Gabriella, four months. The quins were born on January 11 this year, arriving at 27 weeks and three days into Amy's pregnancy via caesarean. The pair also have two older children - twins, Marshall and Spencer - who sadly died at 22 weeks in May, 2013. “It is craziness,” laughed Chad. “We are still getting used to the idea that people are so interested in the babies. Breast milk can be stored in special milk storage bags or in a sterilised container. The NHS recommends storing breast milk in a fridge cooled to 4c for up to five days.
