In 2010, the small community of specialists who pay attention to US road safety statistics picked up the first signs of a troubling trend: more and more pedestrians were being killed on American roads. That year, 4,302 American pedestrians died, an increase of almost 5% from 2009. The tally has increased almost every year since, with particularly sharp spikes in 2015 and 2016. Last year, 41% more US pedestrians were killed than in 2008. During this same period, overall non-pedestrian road fatalities moved in the opposite direction, decreasing by more than 7%. For drivers, roads are as safe as they have ever been; for people on foot, roads keep getting deadlier. Through the 90s and 00s, the pedestrian death count had declined almost every year. No one would have confused the US for a walkers’ paradise – at least part of the reason fewer pedestrians died in this period was that people were driving more and walking less, which meant that there were fewer opportunities to be … [Read more...] about Collision course: why are cars killing more and more pedestrians?

A woman has celebrated paying off her $102,000 student loan debt at 27 years old by holding a funeral for the 'burden' – the last third of which she 'killed' in only eight months. Mandy Velez shared images from the ceremony on Instagram and donned a lacy black ensemble for a photo shoot outside Trinity Church in Manhattan. The New York journalist graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 2013 and set a goal of paying off her loan by the age of 30, without help from her family or boyfriend. But she hit the achievement two years early despite initially only earning $40,000. She paid off the first $70,000 in five years, an average of $1,166 a month, and the last $32,000 in eight months, which equates to $4,000 a month. 'DING DONG MY LOANS ARE DEAD,' she wrote on Instagram. 'It is with immense pleasure that I announce the death of my student loans. On August 2, 2019, after 6 years, I finally killed them. It was a slow death but was worth every bit of the fight.' … [Read more...] about ‘Ding dong my loans are dead’: Woman, 27, holds funeral photo shoot for $102,000 student loan she killed off in six years – and reveals how she paid the last $32,000 in just EIGHT MONTHS

Brian Steven Smith, 48, a married, recently naturalized US citizen, faces one count of first-degree murder; two counts of second-degree murder; two counts of second-degree sexual assault, and three counts of tampering with physical evidence, according to an indictment filed Monday. A court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday. The grand jury returned a special finding that Smith subjected the victim, 30-year-old Kathleen Henry, to 'substantial physical torture,' as well as sexual assault involving non-consensual 'hand to breast' and 'hand to vagina' contact.
