Car crash victim wins body building competition after doctors said he’d never walk again
A man has won a body building competition after doctors told his family it was unlikely he'd be able to walk again following a car crash. Marlon Laight suffered serious injuries after he lost control of his car having taken his seatbelt off for a "split second" and reaching down to retrieve an e-cigarette. The then 26-year-old careered into a Seat and spun off the road on in Cleethorpes, Grimsby Telegraph reported. Marlon ended up careering through a bus stop and could easily have died were it not for one passer-by who kept his airways open until paramedics arrived. Marlon, now 30, was left with serious brain injuries and his right optic nerve was completely severed, making him partially blind. Marlon has gone through an intense period of rehab ( Image: Motionrehab / SWNS) At one point, his mum Helen was told she may have to switch off his life support machine when he was in Hull Royal Infirmary. However, the next day Marlon began flicking his finger and his … [Read more...] about Car crash victim wins body building competition after doctors said he’d never walk again
These 10 Cars Are Being Discontinued After the 2022 Model Year
In the car business, a lot of tough decisions need to be made. It's a hyper-competitive industry with a multitude of players fighting for slivers of market share. When an automaker sees a product in its portfolio that underperforms, it gets unceremoniously scrapped. It could be poor sales, shifting consumer sentiment, a realignment of the brand's priorities or a combination of all three that could lead to a discontinuation. While it's well-known that sedans have fallen out of favor in key customer segments, the slow phaseout of some subcompacts may come as a surprise to prospective buyers. Here's a rundown of 10 cars that won't make it to see 2023. Honda Insight Bouncing in and out of production since its debut in 1999, the hybrid sedan originally appeared as a two-door liftback in its first generation. Farcical Grand Prix that saw just six cars start after Michelin’s ‘deep trouble’
Formula One is renowned for being one of the most challenging motorsports there is, with extremely high paces made even harder by fine margins and the fact there's a wealth of other competitors on the track. On one occasion in 2005, however, the threat of being surrounded by other drivers was eliminated almost entirely with the retirement of the majority of competitors - with only six cars taking to the track for the race in Indianapolis. At the start of the new F1 season, a new rule was introduced restricting drivers to a single set of tyres for qualifying and the race. Back then, the choice of tyres wasn't limited to a single brand and resulted in cars utilising Bridgestone and Michelin respectively. Bridgestone users struggled to adapt, with Michelin cars including Renault, McLaren, Williams and Toyota setting the pace - but the situation changed significantly in the United States, the ninth race of the season, as a major problem emerged with Michelin. In practice on … [Read more...] about Farcical Grand Prix that saw just six cars start after Michelin’s ‘deep trouble’
Fernando Alonso ‘welcomes’ Lewis Hamilton to F1 midfield with warning about difficult challenge
Fernando Alonso has given Lewis Hamilton a ‘welcome’ to the Formula 1 midfield, and has warned his former team-mate about how difficult it can be to make it back to the front of the grid. Seven-time world champion Hamilton is unable to challenge for victories this season as he toils in a Mercedes car which is way off the pace of frontrunners Ferrari and Red Bull following the biggest regulation change F1 has undergone in a generation. The 37-year-old ruled himself out of the race for this year’s championship after finishing a lowly thirteenth in a difficult race at Imola in the fourth round of the season, and sits sixth in the standings heading into this weekend’s Spanish Grand prix, 68 points behind early leader Charles Leclerc. Alonso won his two world championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006, but after coming close to adding to that tally with Ferrari in 2010 and 2012, has spent his subsequent career lower down the order and has not won a race since 2013. Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff furious after FIA president claims Michael Masi could return
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes team principle Toto Wolff have both reacted angrily to suggestions axed F1 race director Michael Masi could make a return, according to reports. The Australian was sacked in February as part of the fallout from last year’s controversial Abu Dhabi title decider and replaced by Eduardo Freitas and Niels Wittich, who are sharing the role of race director in alternating Grand Prix. Masi’s departure came after significant pressure from Mercedes and was seen at the time as recognition he had failed to correctly apply the rules during the restart in the final lap of last season’s final race. At the time of his dismissal, Masi was offered ‘a new position within the FIA’ with president Mohammed ben Sulayem acknowledging the ‘very challenging job’ he had performed over the last three years. But over the weekend, Ben Sulayem suggested there may be a way back for Masi – who has yet to be given his new position – just a few months after he was axed as race … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff furious after FIA president claims Michael Masi could return
‘Everything is better’ – Tiger Woods optimistic ahead of US PGA Championship appearance
Tiger Woods says he is feeling ‘a lot stronger’ ahead of his second appearance of the season at the US PGA Championship on Thursday. In April, Woods made his return at the Masters after a long injury lay-off resulting from a car crash in February last year. However, although he made the cut at Augusta, the 46-year-old looked rusty and was unable to launch a challenge to eventual champion Scottie Scheffler. Speaking ahead of the year’s second major, Woods believes he is in much better shape at Southern Hills compared to where he was at Augusta. He told Golfweek: ‘I’ve gotten a lot stronger since The Masters. We went back to work on Tuesday (after The Masters). Monday was awful. I did nothing and Tuesday was leg day. So we went right back after it. Everything is better.’ Woods eventually finished in 47th place at the Masters but, by the end, appeared to be in a lot of pain. Following his final round, the 15-time major winner could be seen limping out of his … [Read more...] about ‘Everything is better’ – Tiger Woods optimistic ahead of US PGA Championship appearance
Didier Deschamps explains reason for leaving Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate out of France squad
France manager Didier Deschamps has revealed that the experience William Saliba has playing in a three-man defensive system is the reason he has chosen the Olympique de Marseille centre-back over Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate in his latest squad. Saliba is on loan on the south coast of France from Arsenal , and has spent the majority of the campaign starting in enigmatic manager Jorge Sampaoli’s preferred 3-3-1-3 shape alongside fellow defenders Luan Peres and Duje Caleta-Car. Marseille finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season but have improved this time around and are third in the standings with one game remaining, meaning they will qualify for the UEFA Champions League play-off round if they avoid defeat at home to fifth-placed Strasbourg on the final day. Konate, meanwhile, has enjoyed an impressive debut season since joining Liverpool from RB Leipzig last summer. The 22-year-old has rotated with Joel Matip as Virgil van Dijk ’s partner in the heart of the Reds’ … [Read more...] about Didier Deschamps explains reason for leaving Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate out of France squad
Millionaire daredevil proving ‘he had world’s fastest Porsche’ dies in 200mph crash
Daredevil businessman Zef Eisenberg may have started braking too soon in the moments before he died while attempting to break a speed record in a Porsche 911 Turbo, an inquest heard. The 47-year-old was trying to prove he had created the world's fastest Porsche when he was killed in a crash at Elvington Airfield, near York on October 1, 2020. An inquest in Northallerton heard Mr Eisenberg was trying to break a number of land speed records in the "extensively modified" car. As he was finishing the last attempt of the day, his customised vehicle overturned at high speed and he suffered multiple traumatic injuries, dying at the scene. The hearing was told Mr Eisenberg had asked for a braking parachute, designed to slow the car down, to be fitted to the vehicle as he created his own "bespoke design". Soccer-Benzarti to coach Tunisia at African Nations Cup
TUNIS, Nov 19 - Tunisia have appointed Faouzi Benzarti to take charge at next year's African Nations Cup finals after the dismissal of Portuguese coach Humberto Coelho, officials said on Thursday. Benzarti, 59, agreed to the caretaker role for the tournament in Angola in January, his club Esperance said. Coelho departs after Tunisia's failure to qualify for the World Cup finals in South Africa next year. The north Africans had a two-point lead over Nigeria in their group going into last weekend's final round of matches but lost away in Mozambique on Saturday while Nigeria won in Kenya. Tunisia qualified for the Nations Cup by virtue of finishing second in their group. Benzarti was also a caretaker coach for Tunisia when they hosted the 1994 Nations Cup finals, coming in for their final group game after they had sensationally lost the opening match to Mali. Benzarti was coach of Esperance when they won the African Champions Cup in 1994. He is currently in his fourth spell with the … [Read more...] about Soccer-Benzarti to coach Tunisia at African Nations Cup
