OVER the next few weeks the Riverside Theatre presents a trio of events with a difference, in an excellent line up of performers employing their own unique style - and it’s all happening in Coleraine! The first act of this exciting line up, and back by public demand, is Tom Crean starring actor Aidan Dooley, who is known for his outstanding performance in the best show outside of London’s West End and Broadway. Aidan was nominated for Best Actor at the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2003 and best solo performance Award winner in the New York International Fringe Festival 2003. Crean’s story is a testament of human fortitude against all the elements of the Antarctic; his 36 mile, solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly, has been described by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration”. The New Orleans-born musician, whose real name was Malcolm John Rebennack and who was a six-time Grammy winner, died on Thursday, a message posted to his official Twitter account said. A statement said: “Towards the break of day June 6, iconic music legend Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr, known as Dr John, passed away of a heart attack. “The family thanks all whom shared his unique musical journey & requests privacy at this time. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.” Dr John, born in 1940, was known for music combining blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll. A major new live music theatre tour celebrating the 1950s is to visit Scarborough Spa in March next year.
