A North-South divide has emerged as England prepares to emerge from its third lockdown. London and the South East, despite being crippled by the new Kent variant over Christmas, has seen cases plummet in recent weeks. Now nearly all of England's hotspots for Covid are in the North or the Midlands. Millions in the country are now being vaccinated although so far only people aged over 60 have been called forward. But cases are continuing to circulate, especially among younger age groups not yet protected. Pfizer to test Covid vaccine on children aged five to 11, boss reveals
PFIZER is to start testing its Covid vaccine on children as young as five. The pharmaceutical company's boss said it has already finished enrolling volunteers aged 12 to 15 and is now looking at younger subjects. It will begin trials on kids aged five to 11 soon, with data available by the end of 2021. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla told NBC News : "We have already licensed in kids 16 and above. "We are already doing trials with kids 12 years old, all the way to 16 and I hope that we will be able to have data in a couple of months. "We are also planning to initiate pediatric studies from younger ages, from five all the way to 11. "And I believe we should have data about this population by the end of the year." Children as young as six are already being given the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine in a new trial in the UK. Auckland is set to go back into lockdown after a new case of COVID-19 was detected on Saturday. It is the second lockdown for Auckland's nearly 2 million residents in a matter of weeks. They entered a snap three-day lockdown on February 14 after a family of three was diagnosed with the more transmissible UK variant of COVID-19. The seven-day lockdown will go into force at 6 a.m. local time on Sunday. "It's frustrating. I know it is," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said at a news conference. Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, is set to enter a weeklong lockdown from Sunday Saturday's new case has not yet been linked to the previously discovered family cluster, forcing the government to implement the lockdown, Ardern said.
