The UK is experiencing blistering hot weather this summer, as temperatures look set to hit the hottest on record with 41°C forecast. Though many might be excited about catching some rays, anyone with babies knows that hot weather can be challenging for them. So, how do you ensure your baby stays cool during a heatwave, and how can you keep them safe in the sun? Here is everything you need to know. Their skin doesn’t contain enough melanin to be protected from the sun. The NHS adds that babies older than six months should still be kept out of the sun as much as possible, particularly if it’s excessively hot and between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest. If you go out when it’s hot, attach an umbrella, parasol, or another type of sunshade to your baby’s pram to keep them out of direct sunlight. Wildfires: Swansea University developing forecast system
Published 19 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Climate change A system to predict wildfires is being developed at a UK university. Swansea University is working on a model like those used in Canada and Australia in the hope it will help track the likelihood and risk fires pose as the climate gets warmer. At the moment the Met Office uses data from its fire severity index. That offers information on how bad a blaze could get in certain conditions. Wildfires have been historically less extreme in the UK than elsewhere. But they could become more common with climate change. This new system, developed by the university's Centre for Wildfire Research, will be a UK first.
