Legal immunity for Troubles veterans if they co-operate with new commission into deaths
Every death during the Troubles will be investigated by a new truth and reconciliation-style commission, the Government has announced. The Legacy Bill, unveiled in the Queen’s Speech , will give legal protection from prosecution to military veterans who co-operate with the new body. The Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill is expected to bring an end to the prosecution of retired soldiers , some in their 80s, over deaths during the conflict. It will also give an effective immunity to terror suspects on both sides provided that they also co-operate. The new Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery is being set up to “enable individuals and family members to seek and receive information about Troubles-related deaths and serious injuries” and to “ produce a historical record of what is known in relation to every death that occurred during the Troubles”. It is estimated that 3,500 people were killed in the conflict and the … [Read more...] about Legal immunity for Troubles veterans if they co-operate with new commission into deaths

The unprecedented rise in journalist slayings — and what can be done to stop them

Yet media workers are increasingly facing danger and even death, particularly in conflict zones and in some countries around the world. Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran correspondent reporting for Al Jazeera, was fatally shot Wednesday while covering an Israeli military raid in the West Bank. Abu Akleh's colleague Ali Samoudi was also shot in the back and wounded during the incident, according to Al Jazeera. It was not immediately clear where the gunfire came from. Abu Akleh's killing has added to a death toll of as many as 28 media staff killed because of their work this year alone, according to the International Press Institute. Journalists "are coming under increasing attack around the world, and this includes reporting in conflict zones," confirms Scott Griffen, deputy director of the International Press Institute, a global press freedom organization … [Read more...] about The unprecedented rise in journalist slayings — and what can be done to stop them

Her father went to prison – so she went to law school
By Chloe Kim Published 5 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The first time Teeanna Brisco saw her father after he was released from prison was just before her law school graduation, when she picked him up from the airport. Bernard Brisco had been imprisoned for 20 years for non-violent drug crimes, sentenced in 2001 for selling cocaine. His daughter was just four years old. Mr Brisco, now 53, was given the lengthy sentence because of the so-called "three-strikes" sentencing law. Under the policy, which was implemented in the US in 1994, judges had to mandate life sentences for certain repeat crimes. This was only changed at the federal level in 2018, but many states still have it in place. Because he had had prior drug offenses, Mr Brisco was given a mandatory life sentence plus 240 years. In the US, a life sentence is living out the remainder of your … [Read more...] about Her father went to prison – so she went to law school
