It is time to smash the old boys’ network in tennis – or more players will quit like Ash Barty
In the wake of Ash Barty announcing her shock retirement , I can't help but feel there is a need to break up tennis' old boys' network. Barty is a very grounded, family-orientated individual and when announcing her courageous decision to step away from tennis, she spoke at length about how she missed being away from home for long periods on the tour. What has become clear is that she never fell out of love with tennis - she fell out of love with the environment. The two are very different things. I've always been a big believer in the need for increasing the number of women in the tennis workforce. It’s no secret that the number of female coaches operating at the top end of tennis remains alarmingly low, but there are other areas where strong female role models and mentors are desperately needed. I would love to see more women making decisions at the top of the table in a variety of positions from physical trainers, tournament directors, lifestyle managers to agents and media … [Read more...] about It is time to smash the old boys’ network in tennis – or more players will quit like Ash Barty

Investigation launched after woman claims police were involved in child abuse in Glasgow
Police in Scotland say they are investigating allegations that two of their own officers were involved in a child abuse ring in Glasgow in 2014. It comes after Sky News investigated organised sexual abuse in the city and spoke to one young woman who claimed she had recognised an officer who sexually abused her as a child because he was the same man who sometimes picked her up and took her home after she went missing. Data examined by Sky News also show a huge gulf between the number of children referred for help as victims of modern slavery, compared to the number of attempted prosecutions for the crime. Toni Louise, now 22, has waived her anonymity to tell her story. She says she was groomed and sold for sex by a man she thought was her boyfriend. Advertisement The first time he told her to have sex with another man she was 12 years old. She said: "One day he was like 'I need you to do something for me. And well you don't really have a choice in … [Read more...] about Investigation launched after woman claims police were involved in child abuse in Glasgow
Family’s terror over twisted impostor who pretended to be long-lost missing boy
The family of a missing boy who were tricked by an imposter into believing they’d finally found the youngster are living in fear that the conman will try to get back into their lives again. Timmothy Pitzen, who was six at the time, disappeared from Aurora, Illinois, in the US in 2011. His heartbroken family dared to believe their prayers had been answered when someone claiming to be the missing lad turned up in 2019 – but that claim was made by fraudster Brian Rini. Rini gave cops Timmothy’s full name and date of birth, and claimed he’d managed to escape from a hotel where two men had been sexually abusing him. Despite the apparent traumatic claims made by their “new-found son”, dad Jim and the wider Pitzen family were over the moon that their lad had turned up. But a DNA test quickly unmasked the cruel truth about Rini: he wasn’t a 14-year-old boy but a 23-year-old with a criminal record who’d previously made false claims about being a victim of paedophiles. … [Read more...] about Family’s terror over twisted impostor who pretended to be long-lost missing boy

Video of Israeli police beating pallbearers at Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh 's funeral precession in Jerusalem sparked shock and condemnation around the world. Dozens of officers attacked mourners with batons on Friday and at one point an officer can be seen hitting the men carrying her coffin. "We were deeply troubled by the images of Israeli police intruding into the funeral procession of Palestinian American Shireen Abu Akleh," wrote U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Twitter Saturday. "Every family deserves to lay their loved ones to rest in a dignified and unimpeded manner." Israeli police say they are investigating the events surrounding the incident but they accuse "rioters" for sabotaging the funeral by "throwing stones and other objects at Israeli Police officers." That didn't satisfy the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the city's lead Catholic clergyman, who said the "Israeli police's invasion and disproportionate use of force… is a severe … [Read more...] about Family speaks out after Israeli police beat mourners at funeral for Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh
