Maisie Hammersley, from Emsworth, has celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her family, neighbours and friends. Maisie was born and brought up in Southsea, where she worked as a seamstress until her marriage to Jack Hammersley in 1940, when she moved to Southbourne. They had their son Patrick in 1959 and daughter Judy, in 1948. After a couple of years living in Surrey while Jack worked in London, the family moved to a new house in Emsworth in 1959. And Maisie has happily lived in the same house ever since.Maisie has pursued a wide range of interests during her life. In the early days of her marriage, she bred cocker spaniels and grew vegetables to supplement the wartime diet. She has always enjoyed gardening and only gave up the garden fork a couple of years ago.Maisie’s creative skills are many and varied, including all kinds of sewing and knitting. It is alleged that between April 24 and August 25 last year, both dates inclusive, Anne Spence formed a fraudulent scheme to obtain money by stealing a bank card and a personal identification number (Pin) from a house on Balunie Drive. Spence, 67, of Woodside, Kirkinch, Meigle, is alleged to have forced open bank machines to steal money from the 95-year-old. The withdrawals were said to have taken place at bank machines at the Asda store on Milton of Craigie Road on 25 different dates, at Tesco on Kingsway West on 17 dates, at the Spar store in Meigle on a further 11 dates and once at the Scotmid store on Clepington Road. In some cases, the same bank machines are alleged to have been used three days in a row by the accused. World’s oldest person passes away after reaching an incredible 117 years old
The world lost its oldest person yesterday as Japanese born Chiyo Miyake died at home. The Kansai born woman was 117 years and 81 days old and had recently been confirmed by as a double Guiness World Record holder, as oldest person and oldest woman. Miyake was born on May 2, 1901, and her family called her “the goddess” and remembered her as a chatty person who was patient and kind. She has now been succeeded by another compatriot, 115 year old Kane Tanak of Fukoaka in southern Japan, and continues her nation’s hold on the longevity titles, as the world’s oldest man is Hokkaido’s Masazo Nonaka who turned 113 earlier this week. Both of their predecessors as world’s oldest person were also Japanese, and according to 2017 figures, Japan has more centenarians than any other nation on earth, with 48 people over the age of 10 for every 100,000 citizens. 5,300-year-old Iceman feasted on a high-fat diet of Ibex meat
Hours before he died, 'Ötzi' the Iceman gorged on the fatty meat of wild goat and red dear - and it tasted 'horrible'. The mummified body of the Copper Age hunter was found in 1991 in the Alps where he died some 5,300 years ago. Now, the first in-depth study of the hunter’s stomach contents reveal that half of his last meal was made up of animal fat, mainly wild goat species known as the Alpine ibex. The high fat diet was 'perfectly suited to the demands of life in the high-Alpine region' that Ötzi called home, researchers found. The analysis of Ötzi's stomach contents provide a rare glimpse at our ancestor's ancient dietary habits.
