Eid al-Adha celebrations underway as millions of Muslims around the world take part in Covid-safe festivities

· July 31, 2020 ·

MUSLIMS across the globe have been taking part in coronavirus safe celebrations for Eid al-Adha. While some countries, like Kosovo and the United Arab Emirates, have closed mosques for Eid prayers, others have chosen to allow celebrations to go ahead. This year's celebrations began yesterday evening and finished on August 3. The Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque was hosed down with the threat of coronavirus still a major global concern. The cleaning process followed a big congregation at the Mosque sharing noon-prayers ahead of the holy day. Authorities also ordered that the traditional meat for the poor be delivered door-to-door to avoid long lines. … [Read more...] about Eid al-Adha celebrations underway as millions of Muslims around the world take part in Covid-safe festivities

Top UN official slams heartless bid to slash aid budget to war-ravaged Yemen

· March 8, 2021 ·

The decision to slash the aid budget to war-torn Yemen would see thousands die and damage the UK's global influence, a top UN official has reportedly warned. In a stinging attack on UK policy the head of the UN’s Office for Humanitarian Affairs said ministers had chosen to 'balance the books on the backs of the starving people of Yemen.' According to reports the former permanent secretary at the Department for International Development Mark Lowcock described the budget reduction to the country an act of 'self-harm.' It comes as the government prepares to slash aid to help those devastated by the brutal civil war by half. In a widely condemned move that sparked outrage the UK will provide just £87 million to Yemen relief efforts this year, compared to £164m the previous year. The conflict in Yemen is now the world's worst humanitarian disaster and the six-year war has left 80 per cent of the population reliant on aid. The Guardian reports that Mark Lowcock described the … [Read more...] about Top UN official slams heartless bid to slash aid budget to war-ravaged Yemen

Zolgensma: World’s most expensive drug licensed for use on NHS to treat Spinal Muscular Atrophy

· March 8, 2021 ·

The world's most expensive drug has been licensed for use on the NHS in England. Zolgensma has a reported list price of nearly £1.8m per dose, but the health service said it had struck a "landmark confidential deal" with its maker at a "price that is fair to taxpayers". The one-time gene therapy will be used to treat Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in infants. The often fatal muscle condition affects nerves in the spinal cord, leading to paralysis. In the UK, up to 80 babies a year are born with SMA. Children who have the most common form of it - type 1 - have a life expectancy of only two years. Zolgensma, which is made by Novartis Gene Therapies, replicates a missing gene and restores nerve and muscle function. Advertisement Studies have shown it can help infants to breathe without ventilators, sit up unaided, crawl and walk. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) said there was "evidence of exceptional benefit to young … [Read more...] about Zolgensma: World’s most expensive drug licensed for use on NHS to treat Spinal Muscular Atrophy
