BRITAIN will see 12 INCHES of snow dumped by the Beast From The East this week with snow blizzards and freezing winds to hit. Monday is set to be another bitterly cold day with some places struggling to get much above freezing, the Met Office said. Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent and Medway are all regions which that have been hit by an “area of widespread, persistent and occasionally heavy snow”. An amber warning is in place until later today in the south east of England, which reads: “Accumulations of snow will be widely 5-10cm with 15-20cm in places and a small chance of 25-30cm for a few sites." Temperatures plunged to below minus 21C last night following an "extreme freeze" - the lowest in more than a decade. The icy lows come as Britain faces a further three days of cold weather as snow and ice remains a threat, forecasters have said. The mercury dropped to minus 21.4C (minus 6.5F) in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, the coldest temperature recorded across the nation since December 2 2010. Minus 21.3C (minus 6.3F) was recorded in Altnaharra in the Highlands just over 10 years ago. Britain is set for five days of snow after being blanketed in up to 10 inches of the white stuff already this week with new snow and ice warnings in place. As temperatures plummeted by -10C in an Arctic blast, the Met Office has now warned heavy snow will continue until midday on Friday in parts of England and Scotland. The so-called Beast From the East 2 is set to continue bringing snow blizzards and freezing winds across the UK today and there were four severe weather warnings in place until 10.38am, when the Met Office updated its forecast to include a fifth. Lasting from midnight tomorrow until 12noon on Friday, and covering North East England and much of eastern and central Scotland, it warns of potential snow chaos for the rest of the working week in parts of the UK. London's Trafalgar Square transformed into an icy spectacle today as the fountains froze over for the first time in three years, and weather experts warn Story Darcy could bring six more inches of snow this evening along with a bitter chill of -7C. Treacherous conditions caused by Storm Darcy today saw some schools and Covid vaccination centres in the south east shut as police warned people not to travel due to the dangerous road conditions. The cold snap is due to last for some time yet, with minus temperatures expected to continue into the weekend and even dropping to -8C on Thursday morning, in what could be the coldest morning in a decade.
