With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle
Boris Johnson’s move to extend tariffs on imported steel by two years — a probable breach of World Trade Organisation rules — was welcomed by protectionist MPs from both sides of the political aisle. Industry also predictably lauded the decision, saying it will be protected from artificially cheap imports. Much like fishing, steel carries with it a disproportionate amount of political focus compared to its size — in 2020 the £2bn it contributed to the economy was the equivalent of just 0.1pc of total economic output and 1.2pc of manufacturing. But as the industry likes to point out: everything is made of steel. The metal goes into cars, aircraft, new buildings and the machinery that forms almost everything else. Without it, steel insiders say the logic of having a manufacturing industry in the UK would be considerably weaker — a fact that will not be lost on the Prime Minister. The move was pegged as an effort to “protect the steel sector”, Trade Secretary Anne-Marie … [Read more...] about With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle

Troop cuts will leave the Army at breaking point, says Lord Dannatt
Troop cuts are “madness” and will put the Army at breaking point, its former head has warned. General Lord Dannatt spoke out against the Government’s decision to cut the Army by 10,000 soldiers over the next few years, despite the war in Ukraine. It comes after Boris Johnson agreed to increase the defence budget to 2.5 per cent of GDP by the end of the decade. However, Lord Dannatt said it “makes no sense whatsoever” to go ahead with the cuts to troops, set out in last year’s Integrated Review, when Nato plans to put 300,000 troops at high readiness. “It’s a mere fact of life we’ll break the remainder of our Army if our Army is not large enough … to do what the government of the day wants us to do,” he told Sky News. “You can’t make people work endlessly with too small numbers. So numbers in the terms of our land forces really, really matter.” Lord Dannatt called on the Government to reverse the cuts and instead increase its investment in “our land warfighting … [Read more...] about Troop cuts will leave the Army at breaking point, says Lord Dannatt

By Jonathan Park & Pete Cooper Published 3 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing About 400,000 people are heading to the Silverstone Circuit for the British Grand Prix. For the circuit, Formula 1 fans and surrounding businesses in a small corner of Northamptonshire, it is the most important week of the year. Organisers say there has been unprecedented demand this year. Sir Lewis Hamilton might be out of the running for the championship this time, but that does not appear to have dampened the mood at Silverstone. 'Silverstone produces fantastic races' Stuart Pringle, the circuit's managing director, says because people buy their tickets early they have not been affected by the cost of living. "The fans really wanted to get out after Covid, we were sold out on race day by January and Saturday [qualifying] by April," he says.
