This week, a civil jury in Miami will make someone rich almost beyond imagining. At stake is more than $60 billion worth of digital currency, which will propel its owner into the exclusive club of the richest 15 people on the planet. At the same time, it might answer another question that has obsessed cryptographers: the identity of “Satoshi Nakamoto”, the inventor (or inventors) of bitcoin, the cryptocurrency whose value has rocketed from nothing 13 years ago to tens of thousands of pounds today. The jury, which retired to consider its verdict last Tuesday but has paused for the US Thanksgiving holiday, is being asked to decide whether the invention of bitcoin was the work of one person – Craig Wright, 51, the defendant in the case – or two, as Ira Kleiman, the plaintiff, claims. According to Kleiman, his late brother David worked with Wright on its creation in a formal business partnership, and so he is entitled to a proportion of its output. The prize from the jury’s verdict … [Read more...] about Who is ‘Satoshi Nakamoto’, the Bitcoin billionaire who doesn’t exist?

A UK-based computer scientist has declared that a victory in a court case in Florida shows he is the mysterious inventor of Bitcoin. Craig Wright, an Australian who lives in Britain, prevailed in a civil trial in America against the family of his late business partner, who claimed he owed them billions of dollars in cryptocurrency. The jury in Florida found that Mr Wright did not owe up to half of 1.1 million Bitcoin to the family of David Kleiman. Mr Wright was ordered to pay $100 million over a breach in intellectual property rights related to a joint venture between the two men. At the heart of the complex court case was the true identity of the mysterious and enigmatic creator of Bitcoin - "Satoshi Nakamoto". In October 2008, at the height of the financial crisis, the elusive Nakamoto published a paper setting out "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System". It laid out a framework for a digital currency that would not be tied to any legal or sovereign … [Read more...] about I am Satoshi Nakamoto: Self-proclaimed inventor of Bitcoin prevails in legal case
When the law was first drafted in 1996, John Major was Britain’s Prime Minister and Prince Charles and Princess Diana were discussing possible divorce. Mark Zuckerberg was eight years old. Since the US Government passed Section 230 of the Communications Act into law, the Internet has changed so much that it’s hard to imagine what it might have been without it. But the law - which granted Internet companies legal immunity for illegal or offensive content which users may post on their services - has played a vital role in shaping the modern world. “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider,” it says. Without those few words, some of the world’s biggest companies such as Facebook would never have existed - let alone have valuations measured in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Indeed, the very concept of social media - an online world where ideas … [Read more...] about Big Tech’s reckoning has only just begun
Once-prominent California attorney Michael Avenatti tried Tuesday to interrupt his trial over whether he stole money from porn star Stormy Daniels to ask to represent himself, but the judge refused to delay the proceeding. His lawyers made the request to U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman during a break in his Manhattan trial on wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges. Avenatti, 50, has vehemently asserted his innocence on the claims that he pocketed nearly $300,000 of the $800,000 advance paid to Daniels for her 2018 book “Full Disclosure.” When Avenatti stood to try to speak about representing himself, Furman cut him off. “Mr. Avenatti, please have a seat,” Furman directed. “I’m not taking it up right now.” After defense lawyers asked for a brief adjournment to address Avenatti's request, the judge said: “I'm not going to waste the jury's time. It's not happening now.” Recommended Avenatti cast as thief and generous lawyer at criminal … [Read more...] about Avenatti asks to represent himself against Stormy Daniels
Experts have voiced concern over a study that concluded red wine is associated with a protective effect against COVID. A Chinese study, published in journal Frontiers , investigated data, including self-reported alcohol consumption, on over 470,000 people held in the U.K. Biobank database. 16,559 of those people were confirmed to have tested positive for COVID. Overall, it found an increased risk of developing COVID along with increased alcohol consumption. Studies have shown that long-term alcohol abuse can make someone more susceptible to infections. But it also suggested that certain types of alcohol seemed to be associated with a protective role against COVID while others increased the risk. It found that COVID risk was 10 to 17 percent lower in red wine consumers compared to non-drinkers. On the other hand, it also found that consumers of beer and cider had between seven and 28 percent higher COVID risk compared with non-drinkers. "That is, a higher amount of beer and … [Read more...] about Study claiming red wine prevents COVID questioned by scientists
