More info Liz Truss has hit out at Rishi Sunak’s plans to tackle the cost-of-living crisis during ITV’s leadership debate. The Foreign Secretary added: "We need to do better we need to take on Whitehall." She said: “Rishi, you have raised taxes to the highest level in 70 years. That is not going to drive economic growth. You raised national insurance even though people like me opposed it in Cabinet at the time, because we could have afforded to fund the NHS through general taxation. “The fact is that raising taxes at this moment will choke off economic growth, it will prevent us getting the revenue we need to pay off the debt.” Trending … [Read more...] about Tory leadership LIVE: Rishi fuming as Truss goes straight for him ‘Taxes will choke us!’

What happens if I can’t pay my energy bills amid cost of living crisis?
Households across the UK apparently owe a staggering total of £1.3 billion to energy companies. That’s a whopping sum, but when it comes to individual households, the cost of gas and electricity – dictated by Ofgem’s soaring energy price cap – can also feel overwhelming. When will the £400 energy grant be paid and how will you get it?
Every household in Britain will be getting a £400 grant to help them pay their soaring energy bills. Initially, the chancellor offered a £200 loan for energy bills, to be paid back over the coming years. This was changed to £400, and made into a non-repayable grant , and called the Energy Bills Support Scheme. It’s welcome news for many – as Ofgem has announced another energy price cap rise for October , with subsequent changes forecast for January 2023, then every three months . But when will it be paid? And do you need to do anything to get it? Here’s all you should know. When will the £400 energy grant be paid and how will you get it? The £400 energy bills payment will start from October 2022 . House of Questions: All Eyes on HBO’s
Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photo by HBO Max Game of Thrones ended its epic eight-season run three years ago as the most-watched show in HBO history, an unlikely outcome given how it started back in April 2011 . While network suits always had confidence in the show’s long-term prospects — hence the massive investment in production and marketing —they were also fairly certain it would not be setting any records out of the gate. In fact, they weren’t even thinking it would be their biggest hit of the season. “No one is expecting it to hit Boardwalk Empire numbers,” an exec at the network emailed me at the time. Perhaps it was a case of preemptive spin, but those internal predictions turned out to be right: The very first GOT opened with 4.3 million linear viewers, about a half-million fewer than watched the series premiere of Terrence Winter’s mob drama seven months earlier. More than a decade later, HBO is once again getting ready to launch an adaption of a book from … [Read more...] about House of Questions: All Eyes on HBO’s
The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president
ANALYSIS: For the first time since leaving office, former US president Donald Trump has started getting specific about what he would do if he wins a second term in the White House. The pitches he's made onstage over the past month in speeches from Washington, DC, to Dallas to Las Vegas are a stark contrast from ordinary stump speeches. He promises a break from American history if elected, with a federal government stacked with loyalists and unleashed to harm his perceived enemies. There has never been a potential candidate like Trump : a defeated former president whose followers attacked the Capitol, who still insists he never lost, and who openly pledges revenge on those he views as having wronged him. As his 2016 campaign and administration showed time and again, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, he and his aides worked furiously to translate rally slogans into official policy - whether or not there were legal or political barriers to overcome. And if Trump does … [Read more...] about The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president

Weather stations underpin effective climate action—We need more of them | Opinion
Weather forecasts save lives. Every year, millions of people are evacuated to safety thanks to early-warning systems that can predict the path of a hurricane, the intensity of floods and the risk of wildfires. But weather systems are becoming more erratic. Climate change has increased both the severity and the frequency of extreme weather. We need more accurate and timely data to understand how our weather systems are changing—data that is needed to continue saving lives. Yet the global map of weather stations looks much like our planet at night: The brightly lit conurbations of Europe and North America show in sharp contrast to the darkness engulfing Africa and much of Latin America, polar regions and the vast expanse of our oceans. What is more, those dark, data-less regions have got darker as investment in the upkeep of weather stations has dried up , particularly during the pandemic. The shortfall in weather data undermines the science that underpins early warning systems and … [Read more...] about Weather stations underpin effective climate action—We need more of them | Opinion
Every household in UK to receive £400 grant to help with rising energy bills
A grant of £400 will help struggling households cope with the energy bills crisis. Previously, a £200 loan in place for UK families was expected to be paid back. Rishi Sunak announced today this would no longer be the case, and increased its sum to £400. All households with a domestic electricity connection will be automatically eligible for the grant. Mr Sunak said: ‘The outlook for energy prices has changed. I’ve decided those repayments will be cancelled. So, for the avoidance of doubt, this support is now unambiguously a grant. ‘Furthermore, we have decided that the £200 of support for household energy bills will be doubled to £400 for everyone.’ He told the Commons: ‘We are on the side of hard working families with £6 billion of financial support.’ The grant comes in the form of a council tax rebate to households. Energy suppliers will deliver the discount to households with a domestic electricity meter over six months from October. Direct debit and … [Read more...] about Every household in UK to receive £400 grant to help with rising energy bills
