A Taranaki schoolteacher who apparently lost his patience behind the wheel and drove into the opposing lane, smashing into and killing the driver of an oncoming car, has avoided jail. Gerard Leo Clarke, 66, of Taranaki, was sentenced to four months of home detention when he appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Wednesday, after earlier pleading guilty to charges of aggravated careless driving causing death and aggravated careless driving causing injury. Taumarunui businessman Kevin Rule was killed after Clarke, who was heading south in a Mazda on State Highway 3 near Piopio, pulled out to pass a Ford Ranger turning right into a side road on Sunday, February 23, 2020. He smashed head-on into the 69-year-old's northbound 1957 Chevy Bel Air. Rule died at the scene while his wife, Pauline, 67, was taken to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries including a lacerated spleen and a broken sternum and ribs. Mighty crane lift marks milestone moment for Hamilton’s new river bridge
When you’re lifting more than 200 tonnes of steel into the air, the best way to do it is slowly. Very slowly. Hamilton’s new Waikato River bridge notched up a milestone moment on Wednesday morning as the first half of the bridge’s central pier was positioned into place. A 600 tonne crawler crane – presently the biggest in the country – was used to lift and lower the mammoth steel structure into position on the southern side of the bridge build. The pier plus rigging had a combined weight of 247 tonnes. Hamilton City Council A virtual look at Hamilton's soon-to-be-built bridge over Waikato River. A second segment will be lifted into place in the coming week. Together the two steel segments will form the bridge’s central V-shaped pier. TM Lewin collapses into administration for the second time with all jobs at risk
Shirtmaker TM Lewin has entered administration for the second time in less than two years. The 124-year-old brand has appointed insolvency specialists at Interpath Advisory, putting 50 jobs at risk. The menswear company, famous for its office clothes, has operated online-only since 2020, after taking a financial hit at the start of the pandemic. The administration in June that year resulted in the closure of all 150 high street stores . It was rescued by Torque Brands which is part of a US-based private equity giant called Stonebridge, and currently employs about 50 staff, whose jobs are now at risk. Will Wright and Chris Pole of Interpath Advisory, the joint administrators, said that since the buyout the business had “continued to be negatively impacted” by pandemic restrictions on large events and social gatherings which had reduced demand for its shirts. Wright said: “Over the course of the pandemic, men’s apparel – and formalwear in particular – has been one of the … [Read more...] about TM Lewin collapses into administration for the second time with all jobs at risk
How Rangers lined up last time Scottish giants appeared in European final against Zenit in Manchester chaos in 2008
RANGERS are in action in their first European final since 2008 tonight as they face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final. The current crop including James Tavernier, Joe Aribo and Scott Arfield will take to the field in Seville aiming to write their names into Rangers folklore. Managed by the late Walter Smith in 2008, Rangers went on a similarly fairytale-like run to the Uefa Cup final. The Scottish side overcame the likes of Werder Bremen, Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina on the way to the final, hosted at the Etihad. Amazingly, two of Smith's starting XI from the 2008 showpiece occasion are also likely to start tonight. Goalkeeper Allan McGregor, now 40, was between the sticks against Zenit. Vaginal swabs left inside NHS patients 32 times by mistake
There have been nearly 100 cases of a foreign object being left inside a patient by mistake after surgery in England – including a scalpel blade. According to new NHS figures , vaginal swabs left in patients 32 times and surgical swabs left 21 times are just a small number of the grim medical blunders. Some 407 ‘never events’ – things so serious they should never happened – were recorded in public hospitals from April 2021 until March 2022. This is the equivalent of nearly eight every week and is an increase from the same period the year before, which had 364 in total. As some investigations in local health trusts are yet to be completed, the number could also see an increase. Other objects left inside patients included part of a pair of wire cutters, the bolt from surgical forceps, a catheter and a laparoscopic specimen bag, which range from 10 to 15cm. Meanwhile, one person had their ovaries removed by mistake, while six others had injections to the wrong eye. … [Read more...] about Vaginal swabs left inside NHS patients 32 times by mistake

Ivanka Trump reminded of times her father has mocked accents after criticizing CNN panel’s “smug ridicule” of Trump supporters
President Donald Trump's daughter and senior adviser Ivanka Trump is facing backlash after criticizing a CNN panel for mocking her father's supporters and mimicking Southern accents. In the panel, CNN anchor Don Lemon laughed as regular guest Rick Wilson and New York Times op-ed writer Wajahat Ali mocked the president and his supporters over their intelligence. "Donald Trump couldn't find Ukraine on a map if you had the letter 'U' and a picture of an actual, physical crane next to it," Wilson quipped during the exchange. He then laid into the "credulous boomer rube [demographic] that backs Donald Trump, the ones that think that, 'Donald Trump's the smart one…y'all elitists are dumb,'" as he adopted a Southern accent while tearing into the president's base. "You elitists," Ali joined in, adopting a similar southern drawl, "with your geography and your maps and your spelling." "Your math and your readin'," Wilson jumped in, before Ali added: "Yeah, your readin', your … [Read more...] about Ivanka Trump reminded of times her father has mocked accents after criticizing CNN panel’s “smug ridicule” of Trump supporters
