Television is no stranger to creating fantasy. So when producer Danny Wright decided to stage Peter Pan, it seemed like a perfect panto partnership. Maidstone Studios - home to the BBC’s Later With Jools Holland and ITV’s Take Me Out - have been turned into a 1,100-seat theatre for a £500,000 panto gamble by Vexx Pantomimes - but has it paid off? The magic begins with the arrival of The X Factor singer Amelia Lily, who plays Tinkerbell the fiery fairy and flies in from the back of the auditorium while Peter is played by The X Factor 2010 finalist Lloyd Daniels, now a panto pro with seven under his belt. Traffic has ground to a halt in several places in Maidstone after a small section of a main route was coned off. Works are taking place in Tonbridge Road, just up from the pedestrian crossing near Maidstone West Station. Vehicles heading from town are moving slowly, but many drivers have come to a standstill. Some have reported being stuck for around two hours without going anywhere. Traffic is backed up in several places in Maidstone after roadworks in Tonbridge Road. This is cars in Hart Street. There are currently queues to get into and out of the McDonald's drive-thru, which has its entrance on Hart Street, plus the Lockmeadow complex. After drivers took to Twitter to vent their anger, Maidstone council confirmed just after 5pm roadworks are being undertaken by UK Power Networks. Maidstone's popular Fringe Festival is set to return for an eighth year this May bank holiday weekend. The music festival, which takes place in venues across the County Town each year, will be held from Thursday, May 3 to Bank Holiday Monday, May 8. Celebrating the diversity of new and original music in Kent and the South East, it will feature live acts from across a range of different genres from rock, indie and pop-punk, through to acoustic and blues acts, ska, contemporary folk, funk, soul, dance and hip-hop. David Migden and the Twisted Roots will play this year's Maidstone Fringe Festival Incorporated within the festival are also a number of all-day events and family-friendly entertainment in cafes and coffee shops in the town centre. Maidstone has been hit hard by the Beast From the East this week with people waking up to find up to 15cm of snow under their feet. Schools have been forced to close amid the constant flurries of snow across the town and traffic problems have ensured a number of people are working from home. The A249 was shut in both directions following the heavy snowfall but traffic conditions have eased considerably. Residents on Wallis Place woke up to this view across the River Medway Traffic in the centre of town is coping well with a significantly reduced school run, but snow continues to fall and is expected to worsen throughout the week. The battle lines have been drawn up ready for Maidstone's borough council elections in May.Eighteen seats - one third of the council - will be contested when voters go to the polls on Thursday, May 3.The outcome could determine who controls the council in future.Currently the council leader is Fran Wilson, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, but the two main parties of the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are officially neck and neck on 22 seats each, after former Lib Dem Cllr Richard Webb had the party whip withdrawn after he was charged with assault - an allegation that he denies.Both Labour and the Conservatives have submitted a full list of candidates, but the Liberal Democrats were unable to find a candidate in two wards and will not be contesting either Harrietsham and Lenham, or Shepway South.In addition the Green Party are putting up 11 candidates and there are six Independents standing.One as yet untested aspect of this election will be how voters react to Maidstone's new … [Read more...] about Who will run Maidstone council after May?
