Urgent summer health warning as millions of Brits urged to take more selfies

July 5, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

BRITS have been urged to take more selfies as cases of deadly skin cancer rise. Medics have warned sun seekers to be aware of the most common signs of the illness as many experience hot weather . Around one in three people never look for tell-tale signals such as a new mole or a change in colour or shape of an existing one. Research from skin tracking app Miiskin found that just two in five Brits would check for skin cancer if an NHS screening was offered to them. The data comes as cases of the illness continue to rise in the UK with more than 2,500 skin cancer mortalities a year and 140,000 annual incidences of the disease. Around 15,000 of these tumours are melanoma , the most dangerous form. Figures shows that a quarter of Brits are concerned that tanning or sunburn in the past has damaged their skin , and many now regularly take skin ‘selfies’ to help spot signs of the disease developing. One in five have taken photos of their moles to track for … [Read more...] about Urgent summer health warning as millions of Brits urged to take more selfies

Steve Barclay installed as new health secretary after Sajid Javid quits

July 5, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Steve Barclay has been appointed as the government’s new health secretary. The senior politician, previously Downing Street’s chief of staff and Duchy of Lancaster, replaces Sajid Javid who stood down today. Mr Javid had said the British people ‘expect integrity from their government’ but voters now believed Mr Johnson’s administration was neither competent nor ‘acting in the national interest’. He added he had ‘lost confidence’ in the Prime Minister. Boris Johnson ’s leadership is hanging in the balance after he admitted he knew about sexual misconduct claims surrounding MP Chris Pincher. Questions still remain on who will replace Rishi Sunak, who also stood down today. He resigned just minutes after Mr Javid. Earlier this evening, Mr Sunak said ‘the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously’. He added: ‘I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.’ Resignations continued … [Read more...] about Steve Barclay installed as new health secretary after Sajid Javid quits

Tuesday evening UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from the Cabinet

July 5, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Rishi Sunak has quit as Chancellor and Sajid Javid has resigned as health secretary as Boris Johnson's leadership faced a fresh crisis following the Chris Pincher scandal. Mr Sunak said "the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously", adding "I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning." In an incendiary letter, Mr Javid said the British people "expect integrity from their government" but voters now believed Mr Johnson's administration was neither competent nor "acting in the national interest". Mr Johnson had tonight admitted "it was a mistake" to give Mr Pincher his job as deputy chief whip and said: "I apologise for it". Mr Sunak and Mr Javid's resignations come after Downing Street was accused of lying over the Chris Pincher scandal this morning, as Lord McDonald said Mr Johnson was briefed "in person" about concerns relating to the then Foreign Office minister. The publication of the … [Read more...] about Tuesday evening UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from the Cabinet

Marjorie Taylor Greene pushes link between medication and mass shootings

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Marjorie Taylor Greene has suggested—without evidence—a link between shootings and medication, following mass shooting in Highland Park, Chicago, on July 4. Representative Greene, the Republican from Georgia, on Monday tweeted an FBI wanted poster for Robert E. Crimo III , the 22-year-old named a "person of interest" over the shootings at a Fourth of July parade that left at least six dead and 30 injured. Crimo was arrested later that day. "Is this going to be another story where some crazy manifesto will be found? Greene wrote. "Are we going to be told every 'weapon of war' and amount of ammo he bought yet the public won't be told his prescription drug history or recreational drug history." Police have released limited information about Crimo, who had not been charged early morning Tuesday. His potential use of medication is not known. "When are we going to have an honest conversation about drug abuse, mental illness, and SSRI's??? And deadly side effects." Greene asked … [Read more...] about Marjorie Taylor Greene pushes link between medication and mass shootings

Anti-Meghan and Harry twitter accounts mistakenly trolled Sussex NHS trust

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Anti- Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Twitter -users appear to have mistakenly trolled mental health hospitals located in the area that gives the couple their royal titles, Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Tweets targeted Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, an organisational unit within Britain's National Health Service in the county of Sussex. It has nothing to do with the couple's titles. Some tweets targeted a post about the organization's partnership with mental health texting service Shout, which is backed by Prince William and Kate Middleton . The negative comments tagged Shout's official Twitter account as well as the Sussex Partnership one. One comment on July 4 read: "Anything to do with them two lying scabs from America then it gets blocked now. Corruption attached to all Meghan Markle touches." Another replied with a critical blog post about Meghan and Harry only to be told they were not linked to Sussex Partnership. The account replied: "Yes, I see that … [Read more...] about Anti-Meghan and Harry twitter accounts mistakenly trolled Sussex NHS trust

Summer holiday warning as Covid cases soar in European hotspots

July 4, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

SUMMER holiday hotspots are seeing a new wave of Covid as tourists are warned the virus is “still taking lives”. Cyprus, France, Greece and Portugal are among the nations with the highest incidence rates. The World Health Organisation has said BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants are driving the new wave. Both Covid strains, which are more mild than those that came before, share a mutation linked to greater transmissibility. More concerning is that there are early indications that previous Omicron infection does not protect against BA.4 and BA.5 . In its weekly report, published last Wednesday, the WHO said cases in Europe had risen by 33 per cent in one week, the second highest after Eastern Mediterranean (47 per cent).
